He was convinced, but he is simply misinformed – your SSD boot drive is working hard enough running your Adobe apps, playing back video seamlessly at a sustained rate simultaneously is causing you to drop frames. That’s what happens when you involve computer and IT pros who know little about the sustained throughput requirements of video post-production.

If all you’re editing is p2 DVCProHD, you don’t need an SSD or a RAID, you only need a single SATA drive – DVCProHD was very first highly compressed HD codec, and it was designed for easy playback – hard drives were extremely expensive a decade ago when the HVX 200 was released, and Panasonic was first to market with a hi-performance acquisition and editing codec, long before Apple ProRes and Avid DNX were released.

The secret to transcoding proxies is to make certain they are are same pixel dimensions and framerate as your camera original – all you really want is to get all the files converted to an easy to playback ProRes codec such as ProRes LT, while leaving everything else the same.

That being said, to truly leverage the power of your Adobe software, purchasing a 4-drive or better yet, an 8-drive RAID, is what you REALLY need to do the kind of work you’re doing properly. The files are much larger than you probably need, but since ProRes is a high-performance codec you’ll probably be fine as long as you don’t cut more than 2 to 3 streams. Multi cam editing may prove to be temperamental.

Do you know what the bitrate is for your video?

And, how many layers of video and audio are you cutting?

BTW, while Adobe can play back all kinds of native files, not all files are created equal. H.264 for example has small files, but they require lots of computational processing – meanwhile, ProRes has much larger files, but it is a high-performance codec that is very processor friendly. As editors we need to know about these variables and how they affect what we’re trying to accomplish.
