For my two cents I would start with the Telly. They are pretty well respected and in my opinion any awards that have winners and losers are worth the time. Not everyone will respect it, however many do, so they tend to be worth the effort and expense.
If you can get an Emmy, that’s toward the top of the food chain. Good luck.

Can I say an Amen to Bill! Well spoken. For a first video, it is well done but as Bill pretty much says, to be a true pro, you have to sell the product first and foremost (so the client comes back to you) and please the client at the same time (the Texas two-step).

Errors and omissions insurance is a good idea even without the client asking for it. $2,600 does seem a bit high though. We use State Farm for this type of coverage and if memory serves me, we pay about $1,000 per year for about 2.5 million in coverage.

November 7, 2008 at 6:13 am in reply to: International Cityscapes – Is there a resource?Interesting. We had this problem last year and it actually became more cost effective for us to travel across Europe rather than buy stock. Though of course we needed specific shots and we were able to service some other clients during the trip as well. Call me at 312-861-999 and I would be glad to see if we could help you out as well.

November 7, 2008 at 6:07 am in reply to: Roughly how much for something like this, per minuteI have heard this soooo often. How much to charge per minute for video, Flash, 3D and so on. But as said so well earlier in this post there are just way too much variables in todays feature driven applications. So its always best to charge by the hour to get something done. For instance a 1 minute video with just interview clips will be much easier and faster then a heavy animation piece. Hourly fees also help to keep your client honest and less likely to add unnecessary changes.

Mike,
Sounds like you have a pretty tough setup. For my two cents don’t go with a green screen. Without the proper lights and camera it will be a nightmare removing the green from the person’s hair, let alone the glow you can sometimes get on clothing and skin. Use a white backdrop and have your subject wear darker clothes and then treat the white background as a green screen and mask it out. That way any left over white will naturally flow into the new white background. Good luck!

The Pelican’s should be just fine, but if your boss objects, try these.

Welcome to my #1 issue with tapeless workflow. I personally would pay extra for a digital camera that had the option to send to tape as well as P2. Anyway, I digress. It all really depends on how big your project is and how much of the original footage you think you may need in the future. We used to back everything up to DVD’s until the HD era. Now everything is backed up to tape. To minimize the storage footprint we typically start off making a clip library of the footage and ditching the stuff we know we can’t use. After that, pretty much everything is backed up.
I don’t really have any particular tape system that I am really fond of. My only advice there is make two copies. Sometimes those tapes break and that 2nd copy has saved my arse many a time.

Sam,
Try APM music. We have had lots of success with them. Also, I agree with pretty much everyone in this post. Besides the fact that its stealing, you can get into quite a bit of trouble going down this road. Much cheaper to pay for the needle drop on the front end, then to pay for a lawyer on the back end.

Back when I used a PC, Quickbooks was the way to go for all my business needs. Has a learning curve but not too bad. Quicken was just too limiting. When I moved to a mac we switched over to MYOB. Same issues as Quickbooks. A bit of a learning curve and you have to purchase the add ons if you need them. However for Mac users MYBO seems to be more interested in serving our needs. At least from my perspective.
