Normally I would agree with you, but this system has three components: the computer, Finalcut, and the Blackmagic card. BM said their card would work with this machine and it works with Finalcut. I can’t imagine what could be more turnkey.

We will probably go with the AJA card, but BM’s prevarication about the problem really ticks me. And their website still (as of this morning) has the incorrect information posted.

A shame, as I’ve read loads of good reviews about the card.

    According to this page:

    https://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/sd/specs/

Their SP card should work on the PCI machine. The operative text is:

    > “Short” PCI 66 MHz card, fully functional with PCI 66 & 33 MHz
    > slots and PCI-X 133 & 100 MHz slots.

We bought one, based on that, and guess what? It doesn’t work. No video output. Tech support claims that Apple owns the problem and that everyone else is having the same problem (see below.) After much discussion, however, he admited that their (Blackmagic’s) webpage is wrong and should be changed.

In the meantime we are sitting here with a brand new machine bought to Blackmagic’s spec and a full load of software, and we can’t output to video.

Still waiting for Blackmagic’s sales guy to return my call. In the meantime, I’ve talked to AJA. Their sales person was very interested in hearing about this problem. He told me their LS card will work on my system. It costs about $400 more, but maybe it’ll actually work to their published specs…

Any Mac application that prints through the standard printer interface can make a PDF under OS X. There are also a couple of open source solutions, but I don’t have any experience with them.

As for PDF readers, Apple’s preview app is pretty decent. I rarely use Acrobat Reader these days unless I’m filling out an online PDF form.

Metro is based on technology developed by an Asian company called Creature House for their paint and animation software, Expressions and Living Cels. Both of these packages were cross platform at one time. We can only hope that Microsoft continues to develop along those lines.

Having said that, I was very unhappy when Microsoft bought Creature House. Expressions was an interesting vector based paint package (not with out a few issues) and Living Cels looked to be a great looking charactor animation package. Last I checked you could still download Expressions from their website, but Living Cels disappeared.

  • I would hope that the first prize this outfit offered would be a contract to be given to a designer/animator…

Or maybe the posting date of this request is significant…
