It makes sense for you to stick with Sony.

For future projects here’s a nice “trick” to do to help you immensely in your zooming in post: Record your footage in 1080p and then nest that footage in a 720p comp. Scale it down to fit the 720 comp (in Premiere Pro it’s around 67% – Vegas might be different). Now you can zoom in all the way to 100% (and even a little after that).

I personally would give my subject a little extra room when framing him in the shot because you can always zoom in in post without loss of quality and this way you can get that perfect frame.

The Lagarith video codec is a lossless codec that gives small files sizes (at least compared to others.

    Check out this link https://bellunevideo.com/tutlist.php
“The Open Source Tool Kit” tut will have info on this codec.

    hey Rob,
You seem to have more experience with D7K. I’m looking for some pointers on picture styles when shooting video. I’m never sure exactly what settings to use to shoot flat so I can have the most flexibility in post. Do you shoot flat and then fix in post?

Thanks for any help you can give

Is Nikon out of the picture for you? The D7000 is a great camera with killer video picture results. Which leads me to my next question – What type of lens are you interested in getting? On the Nikon side of things you could get a 35mm 1.8 ($200) or 50mm 1.8 ($125) – for the price these are very great lenses. Or do you want something with a more flexible range?

If Nikon is out of the question for you I would recommend doing what another poster said – ditch the Canon 7D and go with the 60D and put the money towards glass.

A good site for info on cameras and lenses is kenrockwell.com

Everyone is speaking the truth. Make your shutter speed double the framerate. If your framerate is 30 make the shutter speed 60. If the frame rate is 24 make the shutter speed 50.

When I first got my DSLR (with the kit lens) I filmed a church sermon. I really didn’t know what I was doing with the settings of the camera. There wasn’t any extra lighting – just the normal lights of the room. Because my kit lens was not the best I had all kinds of funky settings. I just did what I could to make the picture appear brighter. The shutter speed was way off to my framerate. Luckily there wasn’t much movement from the speaker but when he would wave his arm fast the motion blur looked very weird and unnatural.

You could do this idea with any stationary camera. I personally would want a straight on stage shot – I think that would work best.

The computer I work on has a 3.0 cpu and 4GB ram.

I agree with Steve – I synch it manually in Premiere all the time. It’s rather simple and not time consuming at all. No need to spend money on a program that does what you can do very easily.

As for slating – I don’t really need it. Just use the beginning of any word an actor is saying.
