August 10, 2013 at 1:22 am in reply to: How to ensure color is accurate for movie screens at film festivals?Walter, you just saved me a ton of time and frustration go through all that, thank you!:0) I didn’t realize HD footage was already Rec. 709, that helps a lot. I’ll take a look at your info about color management, it will help me get to know it better. Thanks so much for your help and insight!

August 7, 2013 at 2:17 am in reply to: How to ensure color is accurate for movie screens at film festivals? Thanks Walter! My colors are pretty accurate, but there are sharper, better monitors out there for sure. I could export my project and bring it into After effects, open it in a project with a color space of sRgb or Rec. 709, and save it back out with that color space, do you think that’d be worth it or even necessary?

August 6, 2013 at 3:01 am in reply to: How to ensure color is accurate for movie screens at film festivals? Thanks, Morten and Chris! I hear those monitors cost 4-5k or more. It sounds way too confusing to me, no matter how much reading I do on this subject, I’m just not understanding it.
Someone mentioned I’d be safe if I just use sRGB color, and I’m not even sure how to find out how to do that. I am totally lost. I’ve been working on this short film for 2 years,(it’s very fx heavy) and in the end, it may be totally screwed up on color on festival screens and I’d have no idea.

If each festival has their own specs, maybe I can just view the file before I send it to them. I’ll be using withoutabox.com to submit. Thanks for the response!

August 4, 2013 at 7:34 pm in reply to: How to ensure color is accurate for movie screens at film festivals?Hey Ivan, well, my main concern is that I just don’t want anything strange to happen to the colors when it shows on the big screen. Here’s an example, the top image looks great on your monitor, but on a tv or big screen, the color levels may change. It may change a blue sky into a pink sky. I just want to ensure it shows correctly on the big screen.
The short is basically done and edited, all fx are done, and it looks great on my computer; I just don’t want any surprises on the big screen when it shows.

Thanks for your insight, guys! I don’t have the clip from his video, and now looking at the MK pic I posted, I can see how it doesn’t show the banding very well, it did when I had it on my computer, honest, lol.
Yes, the movie was shot on digital. Could it be a problems with using only 8 bits per channel vs 16 or 32? The rest of the film looked fine, but just this one clip, where the dark areas looked separated.
Here’s is an example online of the kind of color separation I’m talking about, but I think you guys know what I’m referring to.

I may have to give that a try if these file sizes back me up, thanks a lot, John!

Hey John! Yeah, I am working between the two systems, but I haven’t used dynamic link between these files, I copied and pasted clips from premiere into AE. But dynamic link wasn’t used. I’ve used it on different projects, but treated this one differently, maybe that wasn’t the best choice, lol.
