regarding the camera or mic +48V ok will do, its a good thing to have it on the camera should the battery fail half way through a wedding ceremony!
regarding the sound desk which is a soundcraft EPM12 I have just tried to go into the line input using a 3.5 to 3.5 cable with a mic (not headphone) 3.5 to 1/4″ adapter on the end and it still did not work. I still find I need the global phantom power set to off for this not to result in lots of interference type sound (you can JUST about hear the speaker in the background when turned right up)
I dont think the transmitter has a separate output volume of its own to try turning that up to full and the desk down low.
I really appreciate your advice and hope you have more!

guys could you clarify a hard drive question for this editing set up..
i’m planning on keepin gone of my 500gb for the OS and programs, and then buying 2 new 1TB 64mb cache western digital drives for video files (set up RAID0)
I just wanted to check that the system wont only run as slow as its slowest drive (my existing OS system drive is probably only 16mb cache) but dont really want to buy another 64mb cache just for operating system unless its really necessary?

one thing I still have to decide is GTX460 vs 470.
I notice the more expensive 470 is officially supported by the CUDA Engine and CS5 as a whole but the 460 needs the hack, is that correct?
If so do you think its worth paying the extra just incase adobe release a patch that somehow blocks the hack?

thanks very much guys. After reading this I remembered I have access to CS5 at work so took in an SD card full of 4gb files totalling 1hr 40 mins.
I copied the PRIVATE folder from the card to the desktop and imported into CS5 and although it shows each of the 4 clips in the project window, the length on all of them is 1hr 40mins.
When I drag the 1st one into the timeline it is 1hr 40mins so it obviously joins them all which is great news.
I did some more tests and moved them out of the default file structure (PRIVATE – STREAM – etc etc) and found they still worked.
When i renamed the files they did NOT attempt to join and interestingly when I renamed them back to what (I think) they were originally they still did not join automatically.
All in all, well done CS5!

Will do jeff. I don’t really need capture at all.
In fact I edit in a relatively simple style. In terms of effects, the most I’ll ever have is black and White, colour correction, contrast, cross disolve (with rubber bands manually) and a title.
Occasional AE work but not often.
If you don’t think this system is overkill I’ll probably go ahead and order today

how strange… i was already by default on half.. i changed it to full and it seemed to sort it out! Perhaps its the action of actually changing the resolution that somehow refreshes it and fixes it. Still to test this for any length of time but this seems to be a solution…

I’ll consider a matrox if I want to use an output LCD but presumably I can add that afterwards so I may just go for the system with i7, 12mb, 1x1tb and 1x250gb HD (unless you can recommend a better configuration… should I have programs on one and video files on another?) and the geforce card you recommend.
I’ll also try that half res thing tonight and see if it makes a difference. Thanks again!

thanks George, I have tried everything you mention except checking the screw but will try that soon.
Is there no way it could be anything to do with the mic being too close to the camera body then?
Come to think of it, I’m sure I would have noticed this if it was doing it right from the start. I’ve had that modified mic clamp on there for a lot longer than I’ve been hearing the hum…
