Hey Dave, Could you put your “stock answer #2” on a big ole billboard that’s viewable through every window in my building for all the YouTube-schooled genius Account “Executives” who insist shooting video is just a matter of turning on a light switch and pointing a camera at something … then, are upset when their budgets are blown because the editor spent hours correcting the shots in post for 3 times what it would’ve cost to just shoot them right? Hmmm, do I sound bitter? ;~)

I just want to point out to fellow AE users that you will not find a more customer-oriented plugin maker than the reborn DigiEffects so, if you’re in the market to expand your toolbox and haven’t taken a look at DigiEffects’ offerings lately, the new tools and much more user-friendly website are definitely worth a look. Glad to help, Randy. Yes, I’d definitely transcode the footage … perhaps to a MOV with the lossless PNG video codec (not a PNG image sequence) or the lossless Animation codec.
No doubt you can do extreme time-remapping via software only … I just meant that best results are usually gained with a combination of both in-camera and software methods so whether you get adequate results depends on your particular footage and requirements.

AE is a very deep program with a very wide range of capabilities and uses so it might help you find the right tutor(s) if you described your priorities … for example, motion graphics, special effects, coloring, keying, rotoscoping, motion tracking, etc., etc., etc.
Forgive my over-answering if you’re an experienced editor just looking to expand your skill set, but if you’re trying to learn AE from scratch, my opinion is that the best way is to have someone walk you through the basics first, read the manual cover-to-cover, read a couple of the better training guides (i.e., the latest Meyers’ book, Classroom In a Book, etc.), do some of the many free tutorials online, then have someone to fill in the gaps for all the things you didn’t fully understand via the other methods. How much time can be spent at each stage varies for everyone, but the more time spent once on the front end (studying), the less time wasted repeatedly on the back end (working … under deadline). Also know that, in order to get the most out of AE, you also need to know Photoshop, Illustrator and at least one NLE application (Avid, Final Cut, Premiere, Vegas, etc.). I hope my two cents is helpful.

I too received that email at my work address … I deleted it without clicking anything, but I can attest that it did indeed look pretty authentic from just the cursory glance I gave it.
I’d suggest posting in the FCP forum too since, although the email is offering Adobe software, it seemed to be directed at Mac users, which there are even more of in the FCP forum than here for obvious reasons.

I work on both platforms too and that’s exactly what I do, but it isn’t a big deal to me since I prefer to have multiple copies of my work anyway. I actually never tried rendering directly to my NTFS formatted drives from my Mac since I assumed it would be far slower to render to an external FW800 than to the RAID system my Mac works from.
I know that’s not the answer you wanted, but I hope it helps some … perhaps someone else knows a way to render to an external NTFS on a Mac faster.

Because it is not Premiere Pro. Why would Adobe (or any other company) dedicate resources to building and supporting two separate programs that are the same? They serve entirely different purposes and, therefore, function differently … PP is an NLE application … AE is a motion graphics, effects and compositing application.
Since you’re new, it may also be helpful to know that you’ll get more and better help if you don’t expect others to do your homework.
