I have similar problem. Manual as well as auto.
You can hear a slight noise (camera mic definitely hears it) even in manual zoom. Not a great lens. -
Phill –
I’m using primarily Hoodman sleeves w SDHC. SDHC cards are RAW (hoodman) 16Gb and Centon 32Gb. Sometimes i use original Sony SxS.Actually I HAVE seen a couple of times when i had to restore media but this was awhile back (during initial testing) and I’m not sure of exact circumstance. Very possibly it was redlight/greenlight operator error.
Also – I’m using ex3’s and I don’t know if the firmware update for the EX1 is equivalent.
The Centon 32Gb (class 6) are $79 at Fry’s, and these are now listed in their online catalog. So far these have been fine.
I’ve also tested the Hoodman Raw 16Gb in Hoodman sleeve to do overcranking at 720p60, and seemed to have no issue. (My understanding is that Hoodman does not guarantee overcranking.) It may be that this test result was an ‘outlier’ and that overcranking on any SDHC is unreliable. For me, so far, it works.
Best of luck –

I’ve been using 32Gb Class 6 cards from Centon, with no probs.
My vendor told me that Hoodman sleeve requires Class 6.
Surprising to learn that Craig is fine w Sandisk Class 2.
As he says tho, ya gotta test. -

If you don’t have $3,800 – you can get a true converter 0.8x from Sony for $450. SONY VCL-EX0877At 0.8x it’s not SUPER wide (also not Super expensive) – and seems to have good optics. Should have less artifact and definitely maintains focus better than simple adapters — and price is similar to 3rd party simple adapters.
I’m very happy with mine.https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/526428-REG/Sony_VCL_EX0877_VCL_EX0877_0_8x_Wide_Angle.html

I hope you can do some more research first.
The sun can really damage the camera if you’re not careful. This specialty filter might to do the trick:
Hoya 77mm ND400 HMC Filter
https://www.hoyafilter.com/products/hoya/oef-07.htmlI saw it advertised online for $158 usd
— even better if you could borrow one, since it’s for 2 hours only.If you can’t find a proper filter, I’ve heard that “welder’s glass” is an old stand-by for this sort of thing. Know any welders?
Good luck – Hope you have fair weather on the 22nd !

Thanks for all the valuable info,
and esp to Michael Palmer for your empirical approach. My post regards CENTON SDHC class 6
I have 2 very new EX3’s, but couldn’t stomach Sony SxS price, so I acquired some Hoodman Kits w 16G SDHC.
After a lot of searching and comparison online, I found some SDHC 32G class 6 from Centon ($79 each purchased in-person at FRY’s).
I’ve only used them twice, plus a couple of tests.
So far I’ve not experienced any actual problems using Centon 32 in Hoodman “sleeve”.
I believe one time during testing, a blank SDHC required reformat,
(not certain if it was a Hoodman16 or the Centon32) possibly after deleting the files using MacPro (I’m doing my xfers using USB reader from Hoodman). So far I have been able to xfer the BPAV folder back and forth from the Mac to the camera and both Mac and Camera were able to read the files without issue. Spanned clips seem not a problem as long as both folders were ingested into LogAndCapture at same time.So far my real footage is in 720/60p. Some testing in 1080/60i.
No experience yet on overcranking w the Centon32s, only the RAW16.I haven’t seen any posts on Centon SDHC –
– my COW search found nothing. Anyone else tried them?I’m thinking that older firmware may be the main issue.
Perhaps newer units (esp ex3) are less prone to 3rd party SxS probs.
(Or maybe I’ve just been lucky so far.) Maybe Michael can tease this out.FYI – Mine are
