Hm, what about a macbook pro as MDC? It’s got a battery so it can handle power outages without a problem!

Check this forum post to see some of our issues and how they were resolved:

We cannot use centralized directory for this because it is for a mobile media trailer…

I still don’t totally understand what’s going on with it, to be honest. We currently have nfs users mapped to nobody and it works. Any other config resulted in broken files.

In any case, read up on some FCP best practices.

As for mount scripts, we use applescripts that are either set to run on startup or manually depending on the situation.

One thing to watch out for is permissions. NFS handles permissions very differently. This can cause weird stuff. We had an issue where capturing to an NFS mount with improper permissions created strange file errors (in the metadata). Our frame sizes and aspect ratio came out REAL weird. It was a pain to isolate the problem, but when we fixed the permissions, it fixed the video.

The other thing to watch out for is your mount scripts… this has been a pain for us at times…

Also it might be preferable to get a tower unit rather than rack mount (can’t believe I’m saying this!), because the customer may want the storage back after the project is completed.

    Bob,

Maybe something from Maxx Digital would work good for this? Prices might fit too. If we want to only hook it up to one machine (and maybe reshare for proxies…), what’s a good fit?

Source files are a mix of ProRes, HDV, and 4k. We’re inheriting this project from someone else, so it’s a bit of a mess at the moment.

Jacob, I just want to give you an impartial (non sales) perspective from someone also in the non-profit sector:

    1. Think of the future. Are you going to be on 2 stations for quite a while? Great. Are you going to grow fast? Think it through…

    2. Assuming just 2 for the near future (1-2 years), these guys are offering good options. Set up a direct connection via ethernet (you’re on mac pros, right?), and if necessary you could get 10Gb cards from Small Tree. Set up some good storage (SAS or something) and share it. You’re done, and for quite a reasonable price.

    3. How much storage? This is a big one… If your storage is going to grow fast, start thinking about your archive now, otherwise you’ll end up losing data somewhere along the line. Disks on the shelf are *not* a stable archive.

You might be a good candidate for Isilon if you have some money.

I don’t have a huge amount of experience with SSD, but from what I know they don’t fail. And when they do, they fail to write, not read. Why go this route? So you can do a 4-drive Raid5. More space, more performance.

But it’s totally up to you, I understand it might be too risky…

We have a couple Drobo’s. They’re super slow, but great for large backups. Redundancy built in means I don’t ever have to cry over a broke disk. But make sure you solidify the rest of your workflow first…

I really think you should consider SSD for C: instead of wasting 2 drive slots on it.
