Ok, I’m looking for some recommendations for a purchase later this week. Here’s the situation:

We already have shared storage — XSAN style, and we’re adding on soon with a NexSAN SataBeast (more on that later)… But it won’t be here for a month or two.

We’ve got an urgent side-project that requires 16-20TB of storage which we don’t currently have room for. Also, it’s possible that any storage we buy for this may not be owned in house (external purchase, they keep the storage afterwards). So… my thoughts are to just get a DAS, maybe through a mini-SAS adapter? We could split it up too, like a couple 8GB raids… I really don’t know.

I think we might end up editing on the proxy files which we’ll end up throwing on our SAN, but we need something to store these files to generate the proxies and to use when we finalize.

I’ll be honest I haven’t looked at this market in a while… so shoot away! I think

As for budget, I’m not sure yet, I need to compile some options to pitch.

What format are your source files?

EVO can provide a direct attached approach to shared storage if that’s of interest to you. SAN & NAS in the same box with modular Fibre & Ethernet options (including 10GbE). You could even edit the proxies from a NAS share on the same box if you wanted…

Urgent side projects are always fun!

Source files are a mix of ProRes, HDV, and 4k. We’re inheriting this project from someone else, so it’s a bit of a mess at the moment.

    Bob,

Maybe something from Maxx Digital would work good for this? Prices might fit too. If we want to only hook it up to one machine (and maybe reshare for proxies…), what’s a good fit?

Also it might be preferable to get a tower unit rather than rack mount (can’t believe I’m saying this!), because the customer may want the storage back after the project is completed.

    Hey David,

It sounds like you just need a couple fast RAIDs. Lot’s of companies out there have good ones. I just saw some mini-sas RAIDs push over 1000MB/s (no there is not an extra 0 in there, that was 1000) insane stuff.

You should be able to find that amount of storage in the $5 to $8k range.

If you want specifics feel free to call me, I’m happy to help.

    come on David,
there are countless great RAID arrays on the market, and everyone that is responding here sells great stuff. And if that’s not enough, just look at the banner ad’s on Creative Cow, on this very forum right now.
There are no “bad” companies advertising here. For straight storage, everyone has a teriffic solution.
You will only see me rant when someone starts asking about the tin cans from OWC or Tiger Direct.

If you need “real” speed i would suggest a 6G SAS JBOD and LSI 9265 with BBU or ATTO R680. I get around 2400MB/s from a single 16bay 6G SAS JBOD.

If looking for a share storage go with a 8Gb FC DAS (from any vendor), but make sure that has a real 6G backplane. There are products on the market that still has the 3G backplanes, they work with 6G drives but performance suffers and you don’t really see 8Gb FC performance.
