Hmmm, yeah I just tried it again and on the second page I get “user has already completed this survey”. I guess it’s smart of them, otherwise people who dont even own the software/hardware could take the survey. Must be linked with Apple ID. Dang.

I got the survey and completed it. Within the first several questions I was feeling rather encouraged… Apple really does care about “us”. I thought this survey would be perfect to post on CreativeCOW (and I mentioned that in my comments), you guys think it is OK to post the link to the survey? I couldn’t find anything in the privacy policy or legal page that would lead me to believe that I can’t share it.

On a recent shoot one of my 3 NX5’s back focus was going so far off it was crazy. Even with autofocus ON, zooming in on something and then zooming out even a little would throw the focus way off, if autofocus was on it would refocus after I stopped zooming (using the LANC zoom controller). First time it’s ever been that bad. In a frenzy right before needing to start recording, I turned the camera off, removed battery, replaced battery, turned it back on and it was normal again for the next ~5 hours. FWIW
Does anyone know if expanded focus “helps” autofocus? Or is autofocus completely unaware of the expanded focus functions current setting? The manual doesn’t mention any relationship between the two, only that it helps you when focusing manually.

Is Your boss renaming the media files from Finder? To make this process easier on you in the future, have him rename the files from within FCP’s browser, then right click the file and choose Rename> File to match Clip. This way it never goes offline and saves you time (just don’t forget to do the renaming, or you might end up confused by the clip in FCP and the file in Finder having different names but its still online). You could make a new bin, fill it with clips that your boss wants to rename, let him rename them and then go back and choose “file to match clip” for each clip on your own when he’s done.
Remember, the File in Finder is “represented” by the Clip in FCP. Changing the clip name in FCP doesn’t change the file name in Finder, so rename the clip in FCP and choose “file to match clip”.

Both RAID 0 & 1 (and 5) show up as one drive.
RAID-1 (mirror) writes the same information to to both drives, (so you get 1TB of storage with two 1TB drives) if one drive fails you still have all the info on the other drive.
RAID-0 (stripe) writes information “across” both drives (so you get 2TB of storage from two 1TB drives), alternating from one to the other which gives you faster performance but if one drive fails you lose everything.
Raid-5 is more complicated and requires a RAID controller and three+ drives. It is both redundant and higher performance. Wiki has good explanations on types of RAID.

I would get two 2TB internal drives, but I would have them as RAID-0 to work from, for best performance. Then continue to use the external LaCie’s in RAID-1 for backups. Although, this still only gives you 1TB of redundant backup storage. Note* I have replaced the drives in three LaCie D2 Quadra’s with 2TB drives, without issue. Two of which were originally 1TB and the other was 500GB.
I pick my drives from the Western Digital Internal Product list and then Google search the model number of the one I want for the best deal. Link- https://www.wdc.com/en/products/catalog/default.aspx?segment=1
FWIW, My setup:
Mac Pro Bay 1- 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black (WD1002FAEX) as the OS or “System Drive”.
Mac Pro Bay’s 2, 3 & 4- 2TB Western Digital Caviar Black (WD2002FAEX) 6TB RAID-0, as the Capture Scratch or “Media Drive”
LaCie 8TB 4Big- For backups (currently RAID-0, soon to be formatted as RAID-5)
Three 2TB LaCie D2 Quadras- For Misc. use (which I replaced the original drives (they were either 500GB or 1TB) with 2TB Western Digital drives, no problems).

I assume that what your boss was told, was that you shouldn’t keep MEDIA files (opposed to project files) on the same internal drive that has the OS installed. This is so one drive doesn’t have to run your OS, the applications AND playback your media all at the same time. So, you should use the other internal drives or an external drive for your media files.
In my Mac Pro I have a 1TB drive in slot 1 for the OS and Apps, called “System Drive”. Slots 2, 3 & 4 have 2TB drives in software RAID-0 for a 6TB “Media Drive”. It’s also important to keep backups of your files on another separate drive, like an external RAID-5. If you don’t have a budget for back ups, you won’t have a budget for anything when a drive inevitably fails.
