I definitely appreciate that you bothered to come back and post the answer, I will use it a lot. To copy from a primary and paste as connected I have been blading I/O points, Option-drag it up, copy, undo, undo, undo, then go paste it somewhere. Kind of ridiculous.

When you don’t want to make any cuts (especially since there is no “join through edit” function) and just take a portion of a clip, the ability to both copy/paste and option-drag from a Range Selection sure would be nice.

I’d say so, but I am not a fan of the Magic Mouse. The Mighty Mouse has a scroll ball, so you can scroll both horizontally and vertically. The rollerball can get gunked up over time, so keep your hands clean. I’ve had to disassemble and clean the rollers on my main Mighty Mouse once or twice I got it in 2008.

As Jeff said, Shift-z. It will always “zoom to fit” so everything on the timeline is in view. My favorite timeline zooming was the magic track pad pinch-to-zoom in FCP7. Hoping for it to be reimplemented in FCPX soon. If you want that feature too, please do use the menu- Final Cut Pro> Provide FCP Feedback. I heard they actually read it.

The high quality/better performance options do not effect export quality, only real time playback performance.

Hi Dennis,

I picked up ProCutX yesterday, obviously I’m still in the “only fiddled with it” category.

I find that most of the functions are pretty much useless (I knew this before buying, banking on the updates being good). Many of the buttons simply are not as convenient as the keyboard & mouse methods we all use now. I see no sense in an app like this attempting to replace standard functions like play/forward/reverse. No thanks, spacebar and JKL are much better.

What I do like about the concept of the App, is having shortcuts that are a combination of two things

1) getting to a window or performing a function that would otherwise take multiple mouse clicks

2) getting to a window or performing a function that does not have a keyboard shortcut, or requires a little too much “finger twister” as well as a glance away from the screen to press

For example, opening the exposure tab of the colorboard. The built in FCPX shortcut (command-control-E) requires you to already be IN the colorboard with a different tab selected. Well that isn’t much help. With ProCutX, in the time between selecting a clip and moving my mouse up to the inspector, I can get the exposure tab open regardless of what was in the inspector before. Nice. Yeah, I have to look at the iPad to find that stupid tiny little button but…

I really think a fully customizable app could actually be beneficial, instead of the awkward half-useable current version of ProCutX, if you could make your own window and button layout to be a “perfect” fit on a per-user basis. I’d make some big fat buttons along the bottom with multiple layout presets to switch between (preferably they would change along with FCPXs, non-existent, window layouts). Combined with a keyboard mounted dock so that the iPad always sits in the same spot relative to the Keyboard (I like it in landscape, standing up right behind F1, F2 etc.). Some commonly accessed functions could actually be used without looking down at the iPad and other useful stuff only needs a glance.

I notice that ProcutX was made by lightworks Solutions for Pixelfilm Studios. Not sure what that means, just an observation.

What you are referring to is probably a time lapse of long exposure still images. With images that are higher resolution than your timeline setting, you have room to zoom in and pan without the loss in quality you’d get from zooming in on a video clip in its native resolution timeline.

I’m not terribly experienced in this area, but have had good experiences with FileZilla. If its working for you now, why not stick with it?

I agree with Jeffs thought of just upgrading the graphics card. I’m thinking about the new Mac Pro, it is comming soon and the rumor mill is picking up the pace appropriately. You may be able to get by with an inexpensive upgrade for now. Holding off on a significant investment in hopes that, whatever the new “Mac Pro” replacement is, will be awesome.

On the other hand, a maxed out current iMac (bought following the advice here) will probability hold enough of its value to justify a relativley quick buy/sell, not to mention enjoying some new hardware right now. The difference in overall price out-of-pocket between these two options could be very small. It’s just up to your current budget and whether you’re even considering the new Mac Pro.

Is your current Mac Pro the 1,1 model? I’m running a Radeon 5770 in my 3,1 with FCPX just fine (FCP7 was fine too), I found a thread that confirms it works in the 1,1 as well, here-

Not sure if its the “best” card for you, but its an option. I’m quite happy with FCPX and recommend you check it out. Unless you need the few specific things added from FCP 6 to 7 I really don’t think it’s worth the price at this point.

What exactly is the problem that your having right now that requires an upgrade? What format video do you edit and whats a typical workflow? Just to make sure we’re on the right track here. Maxed out, brand new hardware may or may not be major overkill and expense.

Ha ha that’s awesome, capturing in FCPX. I rarely need to capture anything anymore but it came up recently (just used FCP7). I was still under the impression that FCPX couldn’t do it at all (except a few supported decks/cameras for very limited tape support). Too bad I sold my ADVC110 a while ago. I think Matrox is going to be capturing right into Events soon though.
