OS X 10.8.2 FCPX 10.0.7
Everything seems to stay just as I left it through a reboot, with either workaround (nudge audio or nudge video). I can even nudge the clip back into place then make a cut and it has that same buggy behavior again.
I’m glad we got the basic behavior of the bug figured out, but I really dont like FCPX changing our edits without telling it too. Be it just a few thousand samples or not. I’ve sent feedback as well.

John, Thank you! You reminded me that I purchased the CoreMelt Polychrome pack in the FCP7 days. Looks like it’s compatible with FCPX too.
Couldn’t find it in my “All install files” folder. A quick Spotlight search found the CoreMelt folder buried in a subfolder within a subfolder of my own motion templates. Oops. It’s like finding $80 in the laundry. Sweet!

Did a little research and came up with this (though I’ve never clipped any Lav mic pointing away from the mouth).
-If you don’t know the lecturers speaking habits and are in an uncontrolled environment. Or for example they do have a tendency to look down and exhale heavily through the nose or they are very active speakers constantly turning to extreme left/right, engaging all of the audience. Pointing it down and using a clip that creates a loop in the wire can help to eliminate many potential problems.
-If the speaker is very calm and rehearsed. They just look forward and speak in a clear tone. The environment is silent and controlled, then clip on the mic “so it looks nice on video” (with audio still in mind, of course).
In any case, be sure to record sound from another mic as well. If its a one camera shoot, the on-camera shotgun on CH1 and Lav on CH2 will at least give a fail safe in case there is a problem with the wireless. I generally prefer to place my wireless receiver close as close as possible to the speaker, like just off-stage and run XLR back to my setup. It might be preferable to run XLR and place the second mic on a stand closer to the speaker. Then you can mix the two in post to get a good “lecture hall” sound to your liking. As opposed to the dry quality of a lapel only, which I think feels very unnatural in this scenario.
*Edited my post, regardless of the type of mic, I’ve never placed it upside down pointing away from their mouth.

Some questions. What is the framing of the shot going to be? Close up of the screen with only the talents hands in the shot? Talent head to toe while they interact with the screen? Single/multicam setup? Have you shot test footage of someone interacting with the screen?
The main problem is the software is both vary specific and variable? I don’t follow.

Ha! That’s in the manual? I do that, but with a cloth, it does work. Until it got so bad that it didn’t work. Probably a case of “an ounce of prevention…”
Anyway, I found a video showing BetterTouchTool in action, using a bunch of gestures in FCPX. Including Pinch-to-zoom, scrolling, Home/End, JKL, zoom-to-fit, frame-by-frame/jogwheel, cut, select, delete, undo, next/previous edit. Looks pretty sweet. His video has good responses and he provides the preset shown in the video as a download.

That’s exactly what I meant, but I didn’t know that enter was the shortcut. I’m just pretty sure that’s what the function was called if you right clicked the edit. I’m self taught as well. Or more accurately, COW taught.

Same here, tons of ideas that would be great. I just hope everyone is actually telling them to Apple, directly. Its the first thing I think every time.
I’m not sure if its related to giving feedback, but I did get in on one of those Apple surveys they sent to some FCP 7 & X users a short while after the release of X. It was like they asked questions that I wanted them to know my answer to. I really felt assured that they are listening and care about making this into a great piece of software.
The morning 10.0.6 came out I felt like a kid waking up to a surprise Christmas in July. I have a feeling it wont be the only time that happens.
