Basically the same thing in FCPX. Hit I and O to set in and out points or use the Range Selection Tool (R) and drag to select, even across multiple clips or click once to select one entire clip (all layers will be included within the selection range). Export. Import the resulting clip and replace it on the timeline.

Clicking the Share button, you can confirm that just the range is being exported by looking at the top of the popup window. It will say “Share timeline range” (or something like that). Using the keyboard shortcut to export, you can tell by the range tool icon next to the duration of the clip to be exported, in the export window.

Just making sure you didn’t get ripped off. I haven’t seen the “because there is no software to install” warning before. I remember people having problems in the past (like Snow Leopard days) who were able to install each FCS app one at a time, but not all at once. Maybe give that a try. I keep a Disc image of each install disc saved on a hard drive. Installation time goes from 4 hours down to 40 minutes or less depending on content chosen to install.

If the previous owner didn’t uninstall, you would get a warning if you tried to open FCP while the previous owner had it running as well, and you are both connected to the Internet.

Your son is aware that the Academic version is only for learning the program, and it is not legal to be used for “work”? I’d advise that he look closer at FCPX, FCP7 doesn’t have a terribly good grasp on life or the future. Not to say FCP7 doesn’t work or isn’t a good program, its just, dead. FCPX is actually very good, despite its poorly received release.

Following the link, you have to select the drop down menus for OS and version, then select software, then choose the XF Plugin for FCPX at the bottom.

Import folders as keyword collections is generally the ONLY box I have checked on import. It only works If you select a folder directly containing media. FCPX will import all of the media and keyword it appropriately:

Unfortunately you can’t just select the top level folder and get each camera keyworded automatically (unless I’m missing something). So, you can uncheck “close window after import” and import one folder at a time. FCPX will also add the folder name to the camera name field in the inspector. Perfect for setting up multicam clips.

Be aware that “copy to events folder” will make a duplicate copy of your media, eating up storage space unnecessarily. Unless you are importing direct from a camera card or an external drive, I wouldn’t check that box. I keep all my original media organized in the Finder, my way. FCPX can just deal with it.

Proxies will be stored in the event folder under transcoded media in proxy media.

Forget those initial analyzations on import, IMO.

Don’t worry, setup is actually very simple. Just a little different than you’re used to.

It works. Are you installing from official FCS discs? Is it possible that you accidentally purchased a boot leg copy? Or are you installing from disc images that are saved to an external drive? FCPX won’t do?

It’s possible that the deleted clip is still in the undo Que. Try restarting FCPX to clear it and try again.

While indicators that its two parts of one clip would be nice, I think the no keywords or ratings filter is doing exactly what it should, show you every frame that has not been keyworded. Yes the handles will still be available in the timeline. Remember, keywords are not a bin with actual clips in it. They are just a filtered view of the clips in the Event.

The problem of two clips with the same name doesn’t really matter much IMO, its only temporary and while you are in that view. Anyway, it’s kind of the point, these pieces of video have not been organized yet, organize them. At the start of a project, you import all the media, then keyword until that view is empty, then move on with the edit or do even more keywording. Either way you’re “done” with the no keywords filter. Then back in the all clips view, each clip is one clip again with colored bars at the top representing the keyworded sections. If the favorites view with multiple favorites from the same clip is confusing, it would probably be better to use custom keywords instead. I figure favorites should be used to mark favorite parts of already keyworded and organized clips, not as an organizational tool on its own.

Once you are done in the no keywords view, you can fine tune your selections. If expanding it, it’s easy. Just select a favorite and drag the in or out point and hit F. If you want to trim it down, you can select the favorite, right click it and choose unmark (the in and out points remain), then adjust the selection and then hit F to make it a favorite again. I doubt that will need to be done much. Just throw the favorite on the timeline and trim it, I don’t see much value In spending time trying to get frame-perfect favorite selections. Of course everyone has a different way of doing things.
