WEVA is older as its been around for ~20 years, 4Ever was a breakoff from WEVA when some (ok, a lot of) people became disenfranchised with WEVA. I say this only so you have some background — in other words, bad blood probably still exists, so don’t use ones name with the other.

What kind of insurance are you looking for, equipment or ‘Errors and Omissions’ (E&O)?

E&O is good to have because in your travels, somebody is going to get disappointed with your work or a screw-up will occur.

I’m leery of equipment insurance (except for equipment that remains on your physical property) because it’s a double-edged sword, equipment costs are dropping but you can’t really afford not to have it – what I’m trying to say is that the insurance company is going to give you less than what you need to replace it because video equipment is like a new car, the value of the equipment drops 25% the second your credit card goes through the talzon.

The best ‘insurance’ you can get when you’re videotaping a wedding I’ve found is hiring some big guy to watch over the equipment. I used to hire my cousin and gave him a twenty…he did eat his Wheaties…

As far as the organizations are concerned, contact them and get the information, they aren’t going to let you get too much information, but they should be helpful enough to give you an idea if you want to join them or not, it’s the least they should do for you before you fork over $$$ for membership and then more $$$ for the insurance…

Ya said: “I might get one of these, yes, thanks. It seems as though no one has a clue about the product. I should have bought two when I got it. It’s a great little piece of ‘equipment’.”

I reply: “Yes it is. I suspect what happened was that back in the days of old, the manufactures usually provided one ‘shoe’ and you had to try and get three things on it. Now, just like in automobiles, they’ve put in the equivalent of 39 cup holders and 84 12V sockets on the cameras, the problem that the manufactures haven’t wised up to as of yet is that the damn cameras are so small, you still don’t have room to put your three things on the camera, hence, why I like the contraption.”

    Would something like this work?

It is big but it works and built tough.

You can find it at NRG Research:

Something I did years ago when I owned a business and helped me separate the “tire kickers” from the serious ones was to charge a “consultation fee” that was knocked off the price of the production if they accepted.

I’ve found (and was confirmed by reading the book “The Must-Have Customer”) that the ones that complain are not serious shoppers…or they are people who will suck the life right out of you. These people who nickel-and-dime you to death wouldn’t work for five seconds without getting paid…and they’ll bitch about how much they’re being paid (as Harlan Ellison in Pay the Writer said in a YouTube presentation).

As others have said, if they turn out to be good customers, then you can change your policies for them…you own the business, you get to make the rules.

    Good luck.
