I haven’t as of yet gotten my hands on the EX3, but in my experence, I find the shutter speed has to be set to at least 1/500, and 1/1000, to get that effect. Have you tried the high settings? If it doesn’t appear to make any change, then I would guess that the Auto Shutter is somehow still on. Info on using the shutter begins on page 56 of the manual.

Hi Jay-

If you want the camera to give you the most film-like look, then I recommend the following settings:

1080p
24fps
shutter ANGLE 180 degrees
gain 0 or -3
CINE 1

Of course expermenting is the best way to get the look you’re after, but if you don’t have time, then this is a start :o)

What is the make/model of the camera you’re using? What kind of projects are you looking at filming? Dramatic, documentary, or music? Or something else? All of this can depend on what type of mic you use. There are so many different types and brands out there that a little more info is needed first :o)

Also, if you want to learn about recording sound for film, a good place to start is http://www.equipmentemporium.com. Go to that site and click on the “articles about prod. sound” buttom (on the left) and start reading. I recommend reading the one called “Hollywood Approach To Production Sound” and “Production Sound” an overview”. These will give you a good idea as to what goes into recording good sound.

Hi Tom-

Most (if not all) professional mixers have mic pre amps built in, as do professional recorders. You can get small portable battery-powered mixers and/or recorders with pre-amps built in. If you’re using professional gear, designed for recording, you don’t have to worry about impedance issues ether.

The bottom line is this: if you want good sound, then you need professional gear, the right professional gear. You’d be better off buying good used gear, than buying new consumer-grade stuff that won’t work the way you need it to. Even the cheapest, used, mixer or recorder you can find is going to be several hundred dollars.

What is it that you want to record? Are you using a camera or do you just need an audio recorder?

Hi Marc-

The cable you’re thinking of is called a duplex boom cable. It comes in different lengths (50′, 75′, 100′, 150′). In using one, you won’t be wireless from her so, there’s really no reason to use the wireless transmitter (the camera will provide phantom power through the cable) unless you don’t want a cable going from the duplex to the mic.

Hi Min-

Rodney’s suggestion will probably be less expensive than mine, but, there’s a device called the Splitmon3, made by Peter Engh http://www.peterengh.com, that allows you to send and monitor up to three set-ups at once. It was orginally designed for sending (and monitoring) audio to (and from) up to three cameras or decks.

You might be able to configure it for your set-up but, it’s a little pricy…$560.00 just for the box (minus cables). It’s small and portable and will fit in a mixing bag. I would also contact them about it, first, to see if it would even work for you.

Thanks for the response :o) I should have provided more info…lol. Actually, I’m not sure of the entire set-up. But, basically, it would be a grand piano, lid up; singer not really close to it. And no PA.

This is not a paying gig…I’m recording a relative who is studying singing (opera, mostly) and I want to do a recording for her. So, I would have (mostly) total control. This would also be in a church (I think), or possibly a concert hall, nether of which would have any people. I’m not planning on doing much post on it so, I want to record it the best I can in the field.

Anyway, thanks for the info on micing. I won’t be doing this until next month so, I have a little time…

Yes, as far as I know. Also, for those who are wondering, 23.98 is 23.976 rounded up.

As to recording 24fps @ 48.048, I think I understand what you’re asking. Hopefully someone else will post here and enlighten us :o)

I suppose the big question is to ask, what kinds of shoots do you plan on using the second camera for.

There are three MAJOR differences between the EX1 and EX3:

1. As you have already pointed out, the ability to change lenes.

2. The ability to hand-hold the camera in a more comfortable way.

3. The ability to genlock to other cameras as well as jam timecode to and from other sources. The ex1 can only generate timecode internally.

Before just going with the EX1, really ask yourself if you might not need at least one of these options in the future. Hopefully someone who has actually used the EX3 will post here as well.
