The mpeg2 iframe is great but you should see it for yourself. Try to get a demo.
The Axio is excellent. Best bang for the buck out there right now.

Best to ask this in the Matrox forum. But I’ll do what I can here.
There is no intermediate mjpeg compression in Axio. The intermediate level of compression in sd and hd is mpeg2 iframe where you can set the bit rate 25-100 mbs in SD and 50-300 mbs in hd. This is 8 bit but a lot of the compression parameters are addressable.
I’ve looked at 100 mbs HD and it’s indistiguishable from uncompressed.

I suggest you wait to see it. Varicam at 24p is 40Mbs not 100. The Sony codec should be FAR more efficient than 15 year old discrete cosine compression. But the proof will be in the pud’.

I think this is the most dead on statement in the thread. For whatever reasons, the original design specs for PPro were lacking some very fundamental things that are necessary for the broadcast market AND for overall useability.
It’s been suggested that the marketing department is to blame, as they typically have the final say as to design choices. Whether true or not someone from Adobe should be listening and learning from these threads. PPro is too close to being competitive to confine its user base to boutique shops and prosumers.

I’m told by a Sony dealer that it’s the other way around. The profit margins on the $400-4000 camera’s are very slim.

One could come to that conclusion as opposed to lack of resources and/or incompetent decision making. OTOH they’ve said from the get go they intended to compete against Avid and FCP. I don’t think Matrox jumped in with Axio with the idea that they were going to sell it to wedding videographers. Obviously Adobe told them they were going after the higher end market.

Probably true on the broadcaster level. The lack of robust media management stops it cold from entering those markets. It would appear, from either limited development resources, or incompetent decision making, Adobe has abandoned the high end market. Really a pity, because they could have made a major dent had version 2 been everything it could and should have been.
As it stands, I think Axio (SD and HD) and ProspectHD will offer decent solutions to post shops. There’s a chance that both may enter the smaller broadcast stations but on a network level? No chance. Not without media management.

Hi Mark,
Cineform has taken care of the mechanics of supprting the LH card with PPro 151. I’m sure they’re doing whatever’s necessary to get it up and running under Prospect HD and PPro2.

You might also try looking at Prospect HD from Cineform. It will ingest your material via HDSDI.
