Forget simulating it except as an exercise in learning your new tools.
If this is a critical part of your project, shoot it. Practical effects are much more fun anyway, they really are.To do this in AE, even if you understood how to use the application’s many particle systems and 3D paradigm, will result in a highly stylized simulation that cannot possibly look real.

the size of the screen is irrelevant.
Assuming you are using conventionally available playback systems, 1080 X something, the only thing that is different between your HD television set and a huge cinema screen is the size of the pixels; the number of pixels is the same.
If you use 12 pixel text, the glyphs may be 4 feet tall but they will only consist of single pixels that are 4 inches tall.
In the olden days of NTSC, we were taught that between 8-12 lines of text was the most that would be legible from across a living room, depending on typeface, leading, color, edge effects, and drop shadow. These technical considerations were all weighed against the importance of the text elements to the story or the message. If your screen is 1080 high, just do the math.If this is at all important, you want to create several test pages and view them from three distances. Note your best options and then make some more tests with more subtle changes to see if you can get a better image.
If you are successful, please consider coming back and telling us how you made out. Most of our discussions around here that relate to projection turn out to be academic because the OP never returns to close the thread.
Hope you get better advice and good luck with your project.

I can’t read your mind, I don’t know what you’re after. But, as an artist, when I use a pencil, or ay other crayon-type drawing tool, I want a line, not something with imperfections. If I want imperfections, I use the appropriate tools. That would be decided by the effect I’m looking for. Imperfections are a result of a hard crayon on a toothy or coarse medium. I cannot make a buttery smooth media/crayon combination carry imperfections without working at it. As an animator, you do the same thing. Obvious the term “grunge”means something completely different to you than it does to me. you are going to erode, corrode, edge amplify or otherwise mess up perfectly good lines. Whatever you do to it, it will be grungier than when you started.

Never heard of realflow but Waveworld in combination with Caustics is fabulous, simply marvelous.

Sorry not to have an instant answer for you. Someone will probably show up in a few hours.
I’d approach this by precompsing or even pre-rendering the strokes and applying filters that break it up to look like a pencil. However, as a pencil sketch artist, I’ve got to tell you that your image of “pencil” is quite different from mine. Yours probably includes lots of grunge-ish effects like I’d get by using charcoal on toothy paper.

I’ve been playing with SHARE all morning. About half of the options work for half of my projects. Results are utterly inconclusive.
However, Flip4Mac may be part of the problem in may case. If I encode a 60 second piece from a DV timeline to full size WMV using just my old first gen Intel, it finishes in about 8 minutes. If I use my machine as as cluster, using Flip4Mac, the same file can take up to 20 minutes.
Going to other formats seems to actually benefit from a cluster but they also sometimes stop or never get started.
So…hardware on my end?

Where are you seeing this flicker? ON your video output? DVD? video monitor? Computer display? Canvas? What scale on the Canvas?
I’m sure you already know that the QT Player and Broiwser will play your raw files in the native format/codec. The Canvas plays them after processing to the timeline/sequence settings and then displays them on the Canvas which is a down-rez display, only an approximation.

No, just plain stupid. This is why God gave us two testicles and VHS/slp.
