Larry’s suggestions are sound but they’re still silly. Just look at the interface and the language Apple uses. “Make offline” what the heck does that mean? Make is a verb suggesting work is going to be performed. Offline is either a noun describing a type of media compression or it is a state of physical being.
Delete unused media from duplicated sequence? Puh-leeze.

Include master clips outside of the affiliated subclips as long as they’re not nested? Ho, yes, gimem some fo those.

Media Management just is NOT that hard to write. The fact that it’s never worked and has never been addressed speaks volumes about the priorities Apple assigns to the FCP team.I’m sure they’re over wokred and have to answer to the usual sets of dumbass second-guessing bosses we all have but they spent years working on that stupid autoselect monster but can’t spare an afternoon or two to make media management part of the success story?

I’m bitter.

I want Motion to live up to its promises on MY machine NOW.
We wasted almost $2k when we fell for Apple’s marketing BS about nvidia 7300 SLI cards. My machines will drive 8 (EIGHT!) 30″ Cinemas but I get not a single cycle of improved GPU performance in Motion.

see kenstone.net for some enlightening articles on how to process clips for the likes of YouTube and vimeo but Facebook? I dunno. With all HD online files, the main problem is the speed of the server, the speed of the connections to yoru viewer, and their machine’s viewer settings. You have control over none of those.

also, you can google artciles by “Jan Ozer.” He is the guru of all online distribution and compression systems. If you want to make a living doing good online delivery you simply MUST buy his training DVD.

There’s a new tutorial here on the Cow for using Gradient Wipes in FCP.
All you need is the footage or a Photoshop[ illustration with some grayscale values.
Gradient Wipes are great tools.

You shouldn’t have to do anything other than initiate a Media Management routine and use some ultra-simple instructions. there is nothing intuitive, easy, or in the least bit FUN about Media Manager. It remains one of the areas where Apple has simply refused to invest any resources.
And yet, we know from many years of such discussions, that tens of thousands of FCP use MM every day for mission critical operations. Beats me. I can’t get it do anything reliably except disappoint and fail.

Ye Olde Media 100 remains a great comparison for so many valid reasons: elegance, stupidly simple and bombproof recapturing routines, so much more.

What is a DVI splitter? Or, more precisely, which one did you buy. It didn’t come with INSTRUCTIONS?

going form 30 seconds to 5 seconds means throwing away 5 out of every 6 frames. Go back to the original, add two or three seconds of handles, and try again.

You might also bring your clip into the timeline, or an empty timeline, and perform your speed adjustments there instead of on the Browser clip.

Kevin, thanks for the “something other than shooting it” post but is autotrace practical for animation?
It’s a tool I gave up on back in AE 3 or 4 whenever it first appeared and was nothing but trouble, never bothered to open it since.

I say get out your credit card and download a bunch of stuff from Digital Juice and their endless collections of Editors Toolkits.
Just searching their online catalog will take you several hours.
