Many text generators can be set to type over a background box. I’m not at my AE box today but I know I’ve got at least two text systems that do that. One is probably a golden oldiefrom DigiEffects.

In the olden days we just did this by hand. You can build a precomp that has several boxes in it, just copy and paste the ones you need. Once you have the height of the letterforms, you can easily change the x-scale. If you have lower case ascenders and descenders, you can easily stack two copies of the same box, ofsetting one in the y dimension.

Why are you imposing your narrow-minded morality on her performance or attempting to censor her self image as a human being? Better check your attitude and editorial lattitude and double check her model release before you go making unilateral alterations to someone else’s intellectual property.

You’ve seen t-shirt logos taken out on various shows? That’s what your best efforts will look like.

    Reshoot.

You can also research LIGHT LEAK and TAILOUT. We see this question about monthly, sometimes more often.
The issues always come down to realism and cost. for realism you must use Artbeats or have access to a filmchain and some old film.

    [Kevin Monahan]
David, do you use only Motion for text now? I still use Boris for down and dirty.

My down and dirty text is just built with the regular text tools in FCP. Anything with any elegance is done in Motion.
    I still loathe Motion.

The boris text movement tools no longer seem to create fields and the sub-pixel interpolation seems to have been rounded off to whole pixels. It’s a mess and no one at apple or Boris is admitting it’s a problem. Lots of us just stopped seeing Boris in the menu for text objects; it’s invisible, sort of, since it’s useless.

No idea what you’re seeing in your head.
You can build something that looks like embroidery in Illustrator. You should be able to make the pattern into a single single line that could come into AE as a vector with lots of control points. You’d be unraveling them by hand, though.

Might be easier and much more fun to shoot a sewing machine.

Patience, A few more days and someone might actually have a workable suggestion for you.

Did you see the Hong Kong Olympics? they simulated a rolling scroll elegantly.
The topic has been discussed here several times so searching might work.
It’s not immediately available in After Effects, there are no 3D filters that coe with the ap that can do this direclty for you.

Unfortunately, this is a known issue. You can search here for similar threads but I do not recall any solutions being offered. I’ve stopped using most of the Boris plugs.

January 5, 2010 at 4:08 pm in reply to: New FCP Multicam Workflow

Your workaround is interesting and I hope it helps others in similar situations but, let’s be clear, and let’s also understand that you do not need to take anything said here personally, it’s not Apple’s problem.

Multicamera editing in FCP is a bit cumbersome (and I hope they fix all the silliness of the setup and improve the interface someday) but, even with the warts, it works spectacularly well. You seem to be insisting on cramming an unusual function on top of a perfectly useful and functional feature that was designed to accomplish a specific but quite different task.

If multicamera editing is a function you require on a regular basis, you should work hard to acquire appropriately synced footage. Folks have been shooting multiple camera events for a couple of decades; the tools exist, the resources are available, the workflow is well-established, the conventional techniques are completely bombproof. Varying from those established systems is not really necessary, it’s a conscious and probably misplaced decision. And your fix-it-in-post Quickeys routine, however cool it is, is still a post production file assembly and modification hack, and it carries the inescapable price tags of inefficiency, effort, expense, and brittleness.

Process design is never about discontent or gut feelings. It is always a question of metrics. Is the new version of a process easier, safer, cheaper, or more efficient than the previous version or of the Dumb Old Way of Doing Things? If the answer to some of those items can be assessed objectively as positive, then you have a process that is a candidate for adoption. However, all good new processes are subject to redesign. You must reexamine your process in a few months to see what can be improved.
I can tell you this: the procedures in place for shooting multiple cameras are in place because they have been proven to be effective, efficient, cheap, and utterly reliable.

  • [Harry Frishberg] “Apologies if this is the wrong forum, but it’s difficult to diagnose this particular issue.

Not a problem, someone will be able to help. Patience.
Meantime, you can search here on the forums for the brand and model of RAID and for that error text stringand you will find many threads. One might help you out.
don’t answer my post, I can’t help you but someone will ask, “Is this a suddenly new issue or has it never worked for you?”

The most likely cause is that your scratch disk has been set to a standard internal drive. Aside from that, common as it is, the only way to deal with this is to contact the manufacturer or drop by their user support forums, if they exist.

January 5, 2010 at 3:35 pm in reply to: Creating Seamless video loop

This is how we’ve built seamless loops in After Effects for many years. I cannot recall who came up with it, probably Trish Meyer or Brian Maffitt but it’s a standard techniqe in palce for more than a decade.

One creates a video clip, divides it in half and make the connection. Actually doesn’t have to be at the 50% mark, if your loop is indeed “seamless” the cut can happen anyplace the loop cycles.

However, the “trick” is knowing that “Frame First” is exactly one frame away (motion- or time-wise) from “Frame Last.”
You should not need to apply a dissolve or use any transparency tricks to align your two segments if your loop is seamless.
