I just took a look at Compressor and I see that by turning Frame Control to “on” I can now change the Resize Filter and Rate Conversion to “best”. I don’t see a setting for adding the pulldown. Will that happen automatically as a result of the setting changes I’ve made? Is there any advantage to adding the pulldown in fcp before compressing?
Do you have an opinion about the best format to shoot on an EX1 if the final output will be an SD dvd? I’ve seen some postings that 720p30 compresses better to mpeg2 than 1080p30 or especially 1080p24. I get it now that p24 introduces a lot of motion blur to the footage that doesn’t compress well.
Are there hardware solutions that do a better job of compressing footage or downscaling and outputting to SD? I’ve been looking at mxo2 for example.

If it’s properly calibrated should my footage look about the same as it does in fcp?

May 2, 2009 at 5:10 am in reply to: 720/30p – 720/60p – 1080/30p Best for SD down convert?I’m just finishing up a project I shot 1080p24 on an ex1 that looked just beautiful in fcp. I got a Matrox MXO for doing color correction and was surprised to see that some of the richness and smoothness of the image was lost. It wasn’t too bad but just not as nice. I have my fcp sequence setting set to prores 422 because I read that would preserve the most image quality.
But my real shock came when I exported the file through compressor for DVD. Even using the best quality settings it just looks so much worse. I realize there’s going to be some degradation of the image because of the mpeg2 compression. I also seem to have lost a lot of the filmic quality of the original footage in the compression too.
I’m trying to follow this discussion thread and not completely getting it. Are people saying the shooting in 720p60 results in the best quality SD down converts?

I just looked at the Edirol R-44. It looks interesting. I couldn’t quite tell from the literature, can it mix the incoming four channels down to two outgoing mono channels that you can then run (rca to xlr) to the camera? Or do you need a separate mixer for that?
Thanks,

Thanks for the clarification. I now get it that my two xlr input connections are each mono.
I’m not familiar with AES digital connections and just googled the term but that didn’t seems to clarify things much. I’m not sure from your response if there’s a way for me to accomplish what I want to do with AES or if my camera is simply limited to two mono inputs and that’s it.

Converting the files from raw to .mov sounds good. Can fcp5 handle dvcpro HD files? I thought the only hd files fcp5 can handle are hdv files. Is dvcpro HD considered the highest quality file format that fcp5 can handle?

I’m downloading the ex1 1.11 firmware right now. I’m very psyched about KxS. How do I go about upgrading my camera with the new firmware? If I do this myself will I invalidate my Sony warranty?

Thanks Amligot for your response. I see in your profile that you have a similar macbook pro and same version of fcp. Is the playback smooth after you copy the files to your laptop and import them into fcp or does it stutter?
