Seems like using Stuffit Expander instead of letting Leopard unzip the files did it. Even though before I cross-checked the folder-tree of the update with the hierarchy displayed in Panasonic’s update manual, it still didn’t work before.

Seems to be happily churning away in the camera now though.

UPDATE:

So, using a coworker’s laptop that had an SD card slot in it, I was able to copy the “PRIVATE” folder onto the SD card that was formatted in my HPX, but now the problem is that when I switch to MCR mode and try to go to OPERATION >>> UPDATE, the word UPDATE is not in sight.

What gives?
