That sounds good too. I guessing you mean input via the SDI connection. I can’t think of anything I own that has that connector type, but I suppose there’d be an adapter for it. What “tape” source(s) are you using it for? I have an old Canon GL1 (sitting in mothballs), but even that is FW.

I’ve been using x264 for years and the .mp4 encodes work great on my website and for Youtube uploads. For the time being, H.265 may be overkill for my needs. I haven’t done a lick of testing yet, but may want/need to in the near future.

I’ve never actually thought of it as slow, it just is what it is. But twice as long might be annoyingly slow.

I haven’t picked up one of the BM Mini Recorders yet, but I have since found it comes with software which may be what you were referring to in the original review you posted.

Yep, dat be da one. Thanks for the reminder, I went through and read the whole thread again. And you were the one that essentially answered my question. I’m in no hurry, but maybe someone will come out with something at some point.

Actually, if OWC or someone else made a reasonably priced bare drive dock with a Thunderbolt connection, I’d be a happy fella. I realize TB is overkill for a single drive, but it would give me the eSata or USB 3 speed without using either of those. As I said in that linked post, I now edit off a 2nd internal drive in the MBP, so it’s really about speeding up backups for me.

I specifically called and talked to OWC awhile back about whether they might have plans to create an inexpensive TB to USB 3 cable or dock, but nothing was planned and the market for it wouldn’t be great since this issue only affects roughly 2011 MBP and iMacs users. I don’t have clients, so that’s not an issue for me, but I’d like to move from eSata and FW800 bare drive docks to USB3 for speed and ease of use.

Someone here mentioned awhile back that a ThunderBolt to USB 3 cable wouldn’t be easy to make for technical reasons (don’t remember what they were), but that would be perfect for me.

I’m not exactly flush at the moment, but considering picking up another 2011-12 i7 Quad 17″ MBP when I have some dough. I think we both did the same MBP upgrades and I’m really happy with mine so I’d pick another one from the online Apple Store/ Refurbished section. The new one would go to my wife and then if I needed an emergency backup MBP, I can use hers. I’m still a fan of the 17″ size (old eyes) and the 1920×1200 screen resolution as I don’t need to go to 4k anytime soon. I wish these models had USB 3 built-in, but I can live with Thunderbolt and FW800.

I’ve begun using the free MPEG StreamClip over Compressor for some things these days because the H.264 or x264 output is also viewable on Android devices H.264 from Compressor and FCP X are not at least without some tweaking that I haven’t been able to find). I have no idea if your issue is the app method of export, but you could download MPEG StreamClip and give it a try. And yes, if you have the x264 codec loaded, it will see it and will become an option when you choose “Export as MPEG4…”

Yes, I would like to know this too. I thinking of picking up an inexpensive “Canon VIXIA HF R400 Full HD Camcorder” to use as a second angle for multicam. The CMOS is only 1/4.85″, but hopefully it would be good enough for a second angle (maybe not).

My older Canon HF S100 Vixia is no great shakes either, but is fine for what I’m shooting. The S100 shoots AVCHD at 1080p 30fps. This R400 shoots at these choices:

AVCHD Progressive
1920 x 1080p / 60 fps (28Mbps)
1920 x 1080i / 60 fps (24Mbps)
1920 x 1080p / 30 fps (17Mbps)

MPEG4
1920 x 1080p / 60 fps (35Mbps)

I edit with AVCHD and MP4 footage all the time on my 2011 Quad i7 17″ in FCP X without any issues. If I decide on this camera, would it be best to stick with the AVCHD as James seems to think for better quality? I have a feeling if the “look” is about the same as my Canon S100, either format would work. Also, I always first use ClipWrap on the AVCHD and work with the native footage.

I agree 100%. I use Adobe Connect and the support in India is horrendous. When I move off of Connect to GoToMeeting or something else, it will be the last time I use anything made by Adobe. They have wasted massive amounts of my time.
