    David,

Your Sonic background is showing. 🙂

Sorry, but Encore does not have any kind of
flow chart display. Would be nice though.

June 16, 2005 at 6:57 pm in reply to: What is the maximum audio db level for DVD Video?

    Dave,

For video production in general there is a “SMPTE Recommended Practice” that specifies an absolute max peak of -9dbfs. That’s for the NTSC world. European/PAL standard operating proceedures may be different by a few db, but I’m not sure about that. Most of the major networks in the U.S. go by this standard. Why? This level results in an acceptable RMS level when converted to analog by AES/EBU compliant D/A decoders.

    Hope this helps.

    Donato,

If the total running time if short then you can crank up the bitrate a lot. Try 7Mb. Also, unless you are trying to cram 5 pounds of whatever into a 1 pound bag use CBR.

June 8, 2005 at 6:23 pm in reply to: Glows for highlighted buttons?

There is no way to do what you want by using subpictures to highlight a button. As you have noticed overlays are always hard-edged.

The effect you want requires multiple versions of your menu – literally one menu page for every glow/blur combination you desire. You then use buttons that Auto Activate and route to the appropriate menu page. (see Encore’s help files for info on auto activate)

This can get pretty tedious if you have a lot of buttons. It’s even more complex if you want to indicate that a button has been activated in addition to being in the selected state.

The hard-edge nature of subpictures is due to the nature of the DVD spec and the hardware that accomplishes the overlay in DVD players. It is not an Encore imposed limitation.

    Hope this helps.

[Pavel Dibrov] “The frame rate is the reason for this?”

Yes it is. More frames therefore a bigger file.

    Pavel,

Was the original 3:4 or 16:9?

Several of the Video Effects that can be applied to clips have a Blending Mode function. Perhaps you can supply some more detail describing the look you are after?

[Eyal Gordin] ” Unless you can recommend a setting for my short reel that would produce best results?”

Hard to answer without knowing the type of content. Is it: location footage, computer graphics or animation?; fast or slow movement?; quick cuts or slow dissolves?; lots of or very little fine detail?; high or low contrast? If it is camera footage is it high-style studio lighting or is it natural lighting using available darkness (lots of noise).

All these factors will influence the choice of encode settings.
