Don,
I had a similar project just last week but did not suffer the same slow performance you describe. I was working with a smaller project about 24 minutes long.
Using MacDrive, left the media on the FW drive and imported to PPro. Took only about 12 minutes to conform the audio. The PPro project and it’s scratch drives were on an internal HDD.
[Don Chan] “File on timeline is not rendered, and is slow for playback. Is that normal?”
In my experience, yes. It almost plays at full frame rate but not quite. Rendering the timeline was required. That took just about 30 minutes – just slightly longer than real-time. Then it played perfectly.

Hi Bob,
[Bob Cole] “I have created a DLT tape using the same list of folders and files.”
How did you create the DLT? You used what software to write the files to tape?
[Bob Cole] “If I’m using eDVD, should I ignore Encore’s method of adding DVD-ROM content to the DVD?”
After you build the DVD files/folder and create the eDVD image file you COULD use Encore’s DVD-ROM content option to add the eDVD image folder to the img/disc/DLT. You would not have to do it this way but you could. Six of one, half-dozen of the other.

I’m not having headaches or frustrations. I’m not seeing the results of sloven engineering. I don’t feel like a beta tester and I know first-hand what that can feel like. I don’t blame Adobe because after-market (a.k.a. third-party) solution providers can’t get their ducks in a row. I have not found any inability to perform the intended purpose. Last, but not least, I have found nothing of value in your missive.
If you’ve got a concrete problem then please, by all means, post it here. On the other hand, if you just want to rant go somewhere else.

Paul,
Are you trying to tell us that, like exasperated parents, Adobe is ignoring us and considers our questions as petulant cries?

Hey Shane how you doing?
You can go from a clean slate as the old apps do not need to be present. All you will need serial numbers from the old version.

Tyman,
The survival guide will be very helpful. It is basically a step-by-step tutorial that illustrates a lot of Scenarist’s power.
They used to offer a package that included their “Unofficial Guide to the DVD Spec” (or some such title) that will be a big help too. It approaches the DVD spec from the perspective of a Scenarist user. I think you will find the money well spent.

Why do you want it deinterlaced? What are you exporting to?

[Chris Holland] “When I bring a New Bars & Tone into Premiere it sets the level at -12.”
IMO, Premiere has it wrong. Perhaps Adobe has a good reason for using -12 but I’ve never found or heard a good explaination for it.
[Chris Holland] “So what is the equivalent from VU to the Premiere settings?”
The link I provided earlier in this thread has a chart that shows the relationship between the most common audio level measurement methods. If you adhere to SMPTE recommended practice then reference tone should be -20dBFS.When recording to BetaSP set the record deck’s level to 0VU as you have been, but using -20dBfs as the reference tone level instead of -12. Then, if your program audio on average peaks close to or slightly above -12dBfs, with a max no greater than -9dBfs, I think you will find that the BetaSP program levels will be just right.
Works for me anyway.

[Pinner] “and peak at 0uv.”
One point that is probably causing confusion is that the spec you quote uses a VU scale. Premiere (and most any other program dealing with digital audio) uses peak meters where zero is the max possible value. Zero VU is not the same value as 0dBFS.
This paper may be helpful.

[Pinner] “So you are saying that standard is bars and tone set to -20bd.”
Yes.
[Pinner] “and main show audio should not peak any higher than -12db”
No. The -12db is a rule-of-thumb for a voice speaking at a normal level – if they are shouting it would be higher. I suggested a absolute max of -9db. These are the specs for the network stuff I have delivered.
