Thanks for the reply, Ben. I should have been more clear: I’m running Windows XP.

After an exhaustive search through hidden files, I managed to find a ModifiedWorkspaces folder here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\dfleming\Application Data\Adobe\After Effects\7.0\ModifiedWorkspaces

However, the three .xml files in that folder have the very un-helpful names of UserWorkspace1.xml, UserWorkspace2.xml and UserWorkspace3.xml (my workspace is named “Dave Workspace” in AE). One of the files has today’s date; the other two are older. Is this what I’m looking for?

Thanks Michael, I’ve switched to using an FTP client for download which will let me pull the BPAV folder instead of the individual files.

Thanks for the response, Craig. Yeah, they did selects for the Quicktimes they sent and delivered the files on DVD. My other option is to call in a favor to a producer running a current version of FCP and see if he can re-wrap the files into something I can use on the Avid.

I’m just really flabbergasted at how much Sony changed the rules with the XDCAM EX format. But, that being said, my options are clear at this point and there’s no sense whining about it. Thanks to everyone for helping to educate me about this.

Here is, in part, what the client sent back to me:

“…if you need the original camera master files, we’d need to give you all the footage because you can’t break apart the file structure of the originals. Since the originals are 61GB, we would need a hard drive which we can run out and purchase or you or someone from (deleted) can send us instead. Otherwise, you can always buy Quicktime Pro to convert the files we gave you to into a format that fits your needs…”

Craig, can you or someone else verify this information? I just don’t know enough about the XDCAM EX format. Thanks!

Thanks for the post. What I was provided with are Quicktime files. Can I treat them the same as raw camera files and use the Clip Browser software for the transcode?

Thanks for the reply, Steve. I’m running Avid Media Composer 3.0, but I still apparently don’t have the codec. Can you point me to where I can get it? I’ve looked through the Sony site to no avail.

Lastly, I’m noticing that when I select “use comp camera” on the PA layers and orbit the camera, the objects appear with 3D extrusion. But, I can’t drive the whole animation just by moving the camera. The layers will have to spin independently also…Is this possible?

As an update, based on some previous posts I read, I exported the Illustrator shapes as .ZXO files from the standalone PA, and then imported the .ZXO files in AE. Now, I have control over the anchor points and parenting, but I don’t have a 3D extrusion on the shapes. I can see a bevel, but the object is flat, which at least the object was true 3D in the other approach…2 steps forward, one step back…any advice is appreciated!

Thanks again…a lot of good information…can I borrow a copy of “Dan Ebberts for Dummies” from anyone?

Thanks for the reply. Were your mobile elements actually 3D shapes, or 2D? I’m pretty sure I understand your workflow setup. Do you have a finished movie you could share?
