I think that may work! I’m going to try it and report back.

I know how to set up keyboard shortcuts, but I’m not sure how to make one to replace edit that would help this.

BTW, there are over 1000+ cuts, so anything that speeds it up would be a huge help.

I just ran into this issue myself when trying to export an XML to After Effects. It doesn’t seemlike there is a way yet. This would be akin t I had to manually recut all of them.

This gets listed in the “Cons” section in my FCPX book.

Yeah, FCPX is a fussy one. I have managed to trick it by making a new clip exactly the same length and format, etc.

In this case, I’m hoping that in effect a nested sequence could replace all the cut apart self contained instances. I doubt it’s possible, but I had to try and ask!

    Sorry for not being clear..

    – He would cut a scene say ten minutes or so, then render it out as a self contained element with no window burns.

    – He would bring that scene back in and intercut it with other self contained timelines and in some cases camera files.

    – I was hoping there was a way to overlay the original timeline with the camera files over the self contained clip in the event and have all it’s instances in the project refer to the change.

I tried (open in timeline) and overlaying the compound clip of the timeline to it’s identical self contained twin, but it will only affect future edits.

In older school terms, it’s like if FCP7 could relink a nested clip instead of the self contained one. (I know it cannot do this or I would have made the round trip)

Is there an edit system that could do this? It would save a ton of work in this 2.5 hour rats nest of a mess. The worst case is that I’m able to use the self contained clip as a reference for each cut I need to replace with the compound clip that contains the camera files.

This is a head scratcher. I’m not sure if it’s possible.

The way Apple could prevent this from ever happening again is by deducting the dev dues from the payouts. Or at least withhold payments until they pay them. Anything but having essential applications become completely unavailable.

As an aside, it occurred to me that oddly the short that will be on Funny or Die soon is a parody of Apple product launch events. I wonder if they knew or something.

(John, loved the workflow tutorials BTW! Saw them on fcp.co You debunked so many of the fears in a calm straightforward manner.)

That was not to say that missing Steve meant I had any disrespect for Mr. Cook. I do feel that by the time the iPhone started to become so huge for them and Steve became very sick that their priorities shifted as a result. My point is, Mr. Jobs kept Pixar alive while he and them were hemorrhaging money.

I believe it was his strong and stubborn belief to keep them afloat whatever the cost meant he knew what it means to keep innovative tools in the hands of passionate professional creatives. I’m sure that’s not lost on Mr. Cook, but I doubt we will ever see the likes of that sort of mind in charge of our future toys in my lifetime.

Yes, I already have it written. As soon as he is back from China I plan on sending it.

It makes me miss Steve even more. So many things seem to be slipping away now.

I also tried that. This particular project has so many sound edits that it was a mess when it got back to ye olde fcp7.

I do think that is Apple’s long term plan to have 3rd party devs handle this. When I was on the other side of this argument, I pointed out that FCS 3 was $1299 a seat where this is $300 for all the computers you personally own.

Knowing now that any AAF functionality comes with a licensing fee going to Avid, it makes sense that if you are one of the rare pro people who need that sort of thing you should pay a la carte.

And I do think that this is a major flaw in the logic of the App Store system. If I forgot to pay my internet bill, it would only affect me, in this case it affects customers of their software. It’s the old saying, cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it on my laptop, same thing. It’s a bummer.
