The system is playing MUCH better; thank you!! I downloaded and ran Disc Warrior on the hard drive with the media. I’m waiting for the DVD with the application/OS to arrive. Should I run it on the CPU as well? Thanks.

Rafael; 30%? Nope! According to Disk Warrior, 37% of my files were out of order! Thanks; I just ran the application on the media drive and hopefully that will put it in working order. Wish me luck.

Below are screen grabs of the information requested. It seems that HDV is not some foreign H264-type of format to the software. Yet it’s choking on this HDV media like crazy! Help!

Im editing on a Mac Pro: os 10.5.8 2x 2.26 GHz quad-core intel xeon computer; 16g RAM. 3 internal 1tb drives were striped as a single raid 0 drive using disk utility as mac OS extended; i reformatted them just before beginning this job. HDV files were provided to me from a client who has fcp express; Im running FCP v6.0.6. I just ran Aja’s system test on my drives. The read/write of a 1gb file with a video frame size of DVCProHD 1080i/60 was 266mb/sec. Not shabby! YET: as I play down my timeline of HDV material it stops and gives me the warning box. This morning it played fine; this evening it wont play more than a couple of seconds without stopping. It is a fairly simple timeline; the project is 11megs. All effects were rendered to the raid and yet it wont play. None of the effects came up as red; but even bright green effects wont play. It simply stops and gives me the error. I dumbed down the playback to safe/med playback/half rate on the frames and that helps it play- but it’s absolutely absurd for a such a robust editing system. I should be able to switch multiple cameras in HD with this thing! What is going on?? Any suggestions?

Your bet was correct. I’m having serious problems playing a sequence of HDV material. My system is new and rather robust so I’m scratching my head why this would be happening. Any thoughts?

Rob: TAH DAH! Thanks; I also had to go back to the AV Settings/ AV Devices tab and turn on “Mirror on Desktop”. Much appreciated. And to Rafael; no I have not been crashing much at all (the entire system is about 3 months old!) but I had accidentally formatted my hard drives as Mac Extended Journaled which I believe was responsible for dropped frames/freezing during playback of my timeline. I figured a reformat and a trashing would be wise to do in tandem. Thanks again.

June 12, 2009 at 4:04 pm in reply to: Sony XDCam EX 1080p with DVC Pro HD 1080i Mix?

It”ll end up as 1080p/24- as the interviews were done. The footage from Africa is 1080i 50 so am I dealing with a standards conversion as if mixing PAL and NTSC together? Will I actually be able to take the .MOV coming from Africa, drop it into Compressor and get a 1080p Pro Rez file? Seems unfathomable to me but I’m more than happy to go that route. Should I then also convert/media manage my XDCam footage to ProRez as well? Thanks. Really appreciate the help.

OK! OK! You beat me down: I hooked up a TV monitor. It ended up being very easy; Firewire out to a camcorder and then A/V out of the camcorder to the TV. MUCH better. Thank you. Tremendously helpful advice. And genuinely appreciated!

BINGO: simply changing the Canvas monitor to view it at 100% and not 108% brought it back to what I had hoped to see! Thank you! I’ve actually done a series of projects on FCP but I have to admit the layout of this software is in many ways not intuitive and bogs me down. Thank you for your help.
