What are your Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously settings exactly?
How many processes are you launching on each and how much RAM are you giving to each process?

I’m not clear on the problem you’re having. If there’s a 3D layer that is not continuously rasterized its effects should maintain their location relative to the layer when you move the layer or camera. Is that the behavior you want or do you want the effect to stay in the same position relative to the composition?

This looks like a clip that hasn’t had its fields properly separated that has then been scaled or moved. It also may be related to incorrect field order or pulldown. That said, the error could’ve been introduced at several points in production. I think it would be helpful to see the original source (YouTube link?) to try and figure out where the problem lies.

I’ll also add that the Stylize > CC Glass effect will use a height map directly to produce the kind of distortion you’re looking for. Unfortunately that effect is not 32bpc capable so I may use my previously detailed displacement map technique depending on the needs of the project.

When you say anamorphic do you mean a 2.40:1 image aspect ratio or do you mean a rendered 16:9 image that will be projected at 2.40:1?
If the former then you’ll want to just work and render at the correct resolution in square pixels, 2592 x 1080 for example (a 2.40:1 ratio).
If the latter then you’ll still want to work at 2592 x 1080 (or another 2.40:1 ratio) but you’ll pre-compose your working comp into a 1920 x 1080 render comp and render from there. This will add the ‘anamorphic squeeze’ necessary for anamorphic projection (assuming that the projector or display device will be expecting a 16:9 source).
If the source sequence is anamorphic I don’t think there’s a pixel aspect ratio that will get you to exactly 2.40:1 from 16:9, so you can simply put the source footage in your 2592 x 1080 comp and use Layer > Transform > Fit To Comp.
If you do the above then pixel aspect ratio shouldn’t enter into it (work in square pixels).

Put the adjustment layers in a pre-comp and collapse the transformations anywhere you use it.
https://help.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/9.0/WS064964FC-424C-4e5a-A5C3-2160B3DFBCA4a.html
It can be difficult to change the effect parameters on the adjustment layers without any layers inside the precomp so I usually copy in a few video layers under the adjustment layers and set them as guide layers. This way you’ll be able to see the effect of the adjustment layers in the precomp and the guide layers will not interfere with the precomp’s usage elsewhere.

In the Render Queue there is an Output To: field you can click on to define where the render will be saved.
If you’ve already rendered something and want to find it you can go to the Render Queue panel, click the twirl arrow on the left side of the Output Module and click the file path link that appears below.

Could you post a link to the YouTube video in question?

I took some time to make a project that shows the “normal map” workflow I like to use. Note that what I’m doing in this project is not creating an accurate normal map, just approximating one to drive the displacement map effect.
Also this project file uses the Emboss effect, which is not 32bpc capable. You can emulate the Emboss effect in 32bpc using 2 instances of the same layer*, but I haven’t done that here. The results aren’t bad with Emboss 🙂
If you increase the ‘height’ value too high on the normal_control null you may need to increase the ‘smooth’ value to accommodate the change. Take a look at all the layers to get a sense of what’s going on here.
You can move the bottom “Normal” and “Normal_Blurry” layers in the Distortion composition to get live updates of the distortion.
*Set the top layer to 50% opacity with the Invert effect applied, offset both layers in X or Y position the same amount (i.e -5 x on top layer +5 x on bottom layer)

November 5, 2012 at 6:43 pm in reply to: expression or technique for flipping between layers? If the opacity should only be determined based on the layer’s visibility you can use Dan Ebberts’ great expression:
https://motionscript.com/design-guide/invisible-facing-away.html
Simply parent one of the layers to the other, rotate the child 180 degrees on the y-axis and apply the expression to both layers’ opacity properties.
