  • [Adolfo Rozenfeld] “Choices are good, and there are as many workflows as there are people”

This is definitely true =) Plus I haven’t had much of a chance to play with CS3 (too busy working) so I actually did learn some new bits of information from your post! That’ll teach me for responding so quickly… =)

[yikesmikes] “So “V” gives you the Selection Tool, then
Select the Vertex on the other end (where you want to switch to), then
“G” gives you the Pen Toll Again, now you can add to the mask on that end.”

By the way, when you’re using the pen tool holding cmd (or ctrl on PC) will give you the selection tool. Conversely, if you’re using the selection tool and you hold opt (or alt) it will give you a context sensitive pen tool.

You could separate the tail and the body by duplicating the layer and using masks, then animate them independently.

  • [Adolfo Rozenfeld] “but you don’t have to download linear profiles.”

No, you don’t. But you can use a linear profile as your project working space and you won’t have to enable linear blending.

  • It doesn’t decompress things, but it doesn’t necessarily compress things either. If you import compressed footage and render it lossless then AE will output an uncompressed AVI/MOV at a very high data rate. It’s sort of the same reason that a 1MB PSD rendered in a comp with a duration of 30 seconds at NTSC resolution will give you a 1.5+ GB AVI/MOV.

I would recommend using either a Turbulent Displace effect combined with a Blur effect, or a Displacement Map controlled by Fractal Noise combined with a Blur.

[Peter O’Connell] “so that the intensity of the turbulence is governed by the black and white image.”

You can sort of fake this now with a luma track matte on an adjustment layer. However, it’s not actually changing the intensity of the turbulence on a per-pixel basis. It just adjusts the amount of the effect that’s applied an a per-pixel basis with a uniform ‘intensity.’ One of those subtly annoying differences in After Effects =)

  • I was going to suggest a radial blur as well, you’ll have to mess with animating various properties to get the right look. However, you should do as much of this as possible in your source footage. The zoom should be in the source footage, you just want to increase the sense of a fast fluid blurry zoom in post.

Is unmultiply one of those options that come in the dialog box with GUESS?”

Sort of. If you tell After Effects that the footage is ‘Matted with Color’ and then choose the color that the footage was premultiplied with (usually black) then AE will know that the footage is premultiplied and should automatically unpremultiply it on the fly. If this doesn’t occur or there are other factors involved then you can use effects to unpremultiply. Try Unmult from Knoll, it’s a free one but its kind of a work around.

Wow, I was going to post a similar response… but I don’t think any of my analogies would’ve been that good =O
