June 21, 2012 at 1:14 pm in reply to: Pricing for DVD authoring (DVD that goes to market)Thanks everyone for the replies, makes total sense. And the thought of tracking royalties gives me a headache. This could lead to more projects like this and if I enter a non-niche world and produce something that could be a hot seller I will rethink a profit-share type of a deal.
Thanks again!

I just had this issue myself and for anyone else with it I found a fix.. at least it worked for me.
Take a look at this forum reply, you need to open the project file in Text editor and make some simple edits. This saved me! All my projects started to do this after I moved my adobe application files to a new folder in an effort to “cleanup” my harddrive… very strange!

Thanks Rich! I assume you mean PSD’s… that’s what I will go with, that makes sense. I forgot that it saves the layers of the vid in the PSD. I am really hoping to work PS into my workflow for color correction since it does such a great job compared to PP or AE. Take care man!

“I think it may not have been a good business move to cancel the gig just for lack of a car… “
Wow Mark, that is a little harsh. You are knowledgeable and I appreciate your input.. it is valuable. I was not going to go into the details of my decision but if you must know, it was more then “the car”. My wife has serious health issues right now and I am not at a place where I am comfortable having her away from me on a separate job. Could I hire on someone else.. sure, but I have other things to worry about with my family then to try to nail this down job. The only interaction I have had with this person was a web-inquiry from my website, I have never spoke with him.. he is fishing for prices for his wedding. Plus, I told him I am unavailable for his wedding day but offered my services for an alternate shoot he also inquired about, I also asked around to some other videographers in the area to see if I could find a replacement. So was this good business? Absolutely.
I am definitely green to the event video world but I am not green when it comes to making well thought out decisions. This is a side gig for me right now and will be a couple years before it can be full time.
Thanks for your time.

Thanks guys.
I had a conversation with him yesterday and explained that he will be shooting with all my cards and he won’t be able to have any of the footage. I told him that once the album is released it will be up to the band to determine if they are ok with the footage being shared with him. He was cool with that and very excited to be able to shoot. I will also have this in writing for him to sign.
Regarding the EX-1.. pardon my ignorance, are you talking a Sony EX-1? I googled EX-1 and saw the Sony PMW-EX1. I am curious what model you are referring too. As I build up my business I am budgeting for the purchase of a “dedicated” video camera to have on hand along with my 2 DSLR’s.
Thanks again!

Thanks all for the replies! I actually turned down their request because of logistics… having 1 car between my wife & I is a big issue plus some other small things that would make it too difficult and we would have to rent a bunch of gear since we would be in separate locations.
The good thing from this is it was good pressure to look at my rates and think about this type of scenario. If we stop learning, we (and our business) will stop growing.
Thanks again for all the perspectives!

Nevermind on the “how much is a day rate” question.. this post answered that: https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/11/856379#856379
I would still like to know anyone elses thoughts on things I should be careful of… I learn most from hearing “what not to do” stories. Thanks!

I guess I need a day rate then 🙂 This sort of thing is good because it forces me to build out the details of my business plan and pricing. Thanks.
Anyone else have any things I should watch out for? I was going over their request and they are very detailed about having 2 videographers (which we have) and they us at separate locations throughout the day, then only 1 doing the ceremony with 2 camera’s and 1 at the reception. My partner is my wife and we have 1 vehicle… so there will be some interesting details to work out here.
Another question.. what are common “day rates” people charge? I was thinking of doing straight hourly but it would be 16.5 hours of requested time between the 2 of us (they want us a second day as well), so the cost would be close to my smaller wedding package.
Thanks for helping a noobie out!

I emailed the gal a week ago and was straight up with her.. I said if she wanted a awesome final HD video of her day we can do that and if she wanted a cut and dry Skype-like stream of the ceremony with one stationary camera we could also do that… but I told her that if the stream was important to her she will want to research a webcasting company to do it right. No response yet. I have no desire to get any new gear for live streams, so I will probably let this go.. UNLESS she wants to pay a little extra for a MacGuyver stream 🙂
Thanks Brent

Good information guys! I do like the Magnum, but a used one is still out my price range. I wouldn’t have every considered a Prius but you make a good point with rising gas prices Brent. Only the rare shoot would involve the crane so a smaller car may be doable for us. I think I am still stuck on the Element though. I started looking at used ones and they seem to hold their value extremely well, plus you can’t go wrong with a Honda!
Very cool stuff. Thanks everyone.
