    Thanks guys,
It is the lack of the queue that is really getting me down. Bummer. Render, wait, render, wait. For the alpha mattes I made a handy script that dupes a comp and inserts a channel filter to extract the alpha as a black and white image.

Thanks for the info, now I can stop hunting for a single step solution and get back to waiting on that next export…

    Barking up wrong tree—

Illustrator will do the work I need here.

    Thanks!

Ah… I see the problem… Are you saying that I can pull up the menu, but I cannot send variables to the trace function as parameters, or initiate the trace via scripting?

My goal here is to trace black and white stills at intervals of tolerance across its luminance values- kind of like a posterization. It is time consuming to repeatedly auto-trace the same image ten to twenty times– Even if I split the image into layers of various luminance values in Photoshop before tracing in AE, I am still stuck with the same boring trace-and-wait scenario.
I was hoping to develop some scripting algorithm to handle the tedium for me… any suggestions?

    Thanks for the help!

    Yep, that did it—
no shift in timing and once converted to DV, timing is still good…

Would it be safe to say then that, as a general rule, when timing is critical, render as Animation and then convert to another format?

Main issue here is obviously the animation output is close to 6GB in this case for a 5 min video.

any ideas why this shift happens in the first place? I have noticed a few other posts with similar issues using quicktime…

    thanks for the help!
