1. you are using VBR instead of CBR
2. don´t use PCM audio for you DVD, it´s THE reason in 90% of all cases why DVDs will not play smoothly. again, as mentioned before – use dolby digital audio@192kbit/s

I guess your problem is wrong field-dominance.

HD1080i60 is upper field first but SD NTSC is lower field first, so you need to tell the encoder to encode upper first to keep the lines in the right order.

so – I guess you need to create your own encoding-preset and encode it again.

hey chris,
you need to know a bit more about DVD-specs to do DVD-authoring.

DVD-spec is a max. data-rate about 10.08MBit/s for all assets (video/audio/subtitles).

a DVD-/+R could only have approx. 8-8.5MBit/s.

if you have a 4-5min film I would advice to use 7.8MBit/s CBR and 192kbit/s AC-3 dolby audio.

yes, that´s correct!

it´s a common workflow to conform 23.98 to 25 for PAL-countries. it´ll run approx 4% faster, but it´s a very easy option.

and you can do it with 1 click within apple cinema tools.

to go 23.98 probably is the best way you can go, because of cinema all over the world.

only 1080p24 and 1080p23.98 is valid for progressive material… and you can present them easily in cinemas as well.

another point is, that PAL wont fir to NTSC and vise versa.

hi,
you need to use subrip (pc-freeware) to rip the subtitle.

subtitles aren´t present in the VMG, they are located in the VTS as well.

mpeg stream or any other programm that you mentioned wont be able to rip subtitles.
