seriously that´s true – there´s a lot work to do if you would like to do discs like that.

but in fact it´s all possible to do with DVD-Logic-products – BD-J could be implemented using BD-Author.

I just wanted to show it´s also possible with other tools than the “usual suspects”.

If Encore it TOO limited for you (and it is indeed), you might have a look at EasyBD or BDAuthor from DVD Logic:

this software has the best price/value-ratio that I could see… learning-curve as well, but much more simple than scenarist and blu-print.

and: yes – it´s correct, there´s a bunch of BD-Java on AVATAR. I´ve got both versions over here (2d and 3d)….

this is a usual behave that chapter-marker have no end-action and the video will play till the end.

if you would like to get back from the chapter-play to a chapter-menu you need to create playlists from each chapter. it will jump back to the dedicated button in the chapter-menu afterwards playing the chapter.

note: you can´t do scripting or movieobject-editing within encore – if you would like to do that, you need 3rd party software.

Chris,
iDVD could not use previously encoded assets. you must iDVD let do the enoding-job, it will create MPEG2 video and PCM audio.

as Michael stated, it´s allways better do do a downscale prior encoding for a better encoding-result.

there´s also a known bug within iDVD – if you do not have squared pixel 16:9-aspec-ratio within your video it wont be encoded as 16:9, so you might need to change the quicktime-properties of the movie.

and according your green artefacts – I´ve only know thinks like that if the video is H264/M4V.

and – be awared as Michael also described: 1080i has upper field first, while NTSC SD has lower field first ( PAL has upper + lower depending on your codecs), so you might get problems with the encoding through iDVD.

you need to choose 1080p29.98 as 1080i60 and 1080i29.98 is the same (only another description). as described – there is no real 1080p29.98 within the BD-spec, so the 1080p29.98-setting from media encoder should result in 1080psf29.98. psf stands for progressive segmented frame, meaning a progressive picture within an interlaced wrapper.

all you´re doing is an upscale.

but: you might be awared of HDV 720p – it´s an anamorph HD-format as the native resolution is 960×720 and will be scaled to 1280×720 through the dedicated codec. this could cause a problem.

all I can say: use your eyes 😉

Hi guys,
there are different issues!

BD specs cover theses framerates: 1080p23.98, 1080p24, 1080i60 and for countries that are broadcasting in 25fps there´s 1080i50 as well. for 720p you´ve got 720p60 or (25fps-countries) 720p50.

there is no 720p29.98 at all….

so the best way to bring it to BD would be upscaling to 1920×1080 and use a 1080i60-encoding-setting. this will result into 1080psf60, without any problems.

workflow-issue!

first step would be to export to a different format from premiere. if you choose h264 and then afterwards transcode it to BD H264, you will lose quality, because of 2nd generation (2 times encoding).

if you choose export to apple pro res (MAC) or any uncompressed AVI or quicktime codec (PC), then starting to encode it to BD-h264 that´s a lot better.

according to bitrate: blu-ray h264 is limited to 40MBit/s according to BD-spec. in most cases the bitrate will not get higher than 25-35MBit/s. you should encode your assets prior authoring the disc with encore.

there is one thing to know: encore is transcoding its menus to MPEG2HD, if you input H264 or anything else so you should better use uncompressed media or MPEG2HD for the menu.

and you should also know that encore will allways transcode your material of it wont fit your project-settings, so take a look at it first.

Hi again,
if you use 720p30 it´s somehow a worst case, as 720p30 is not supported by the BD-specs.

these are BD-spec:
1080p23.98, 1080p24, 1080i50, 1080i60, 720p60, 720p50.

so if you would like to put your video on a blu-ray you need to convert it to another frame-rate. I would advice to go to a smaller one, as you´ll get better quality to generate a lower frame-rate like 1080p24 out of 720p30.

you need to use compressor frame-control-option to do so.

you might do this in two steps:

1. scaling 720p to 1080p30
2. framerate-conversion from p30 to p24

building a BD with encore is ok – but if you would like to do more advanced BDs you should look for an other authoring-app like EasyBD (PC-soft).
