  • Oh sorry typo
    Yes Ii did

  • Hi,
nope.. that was one of the first things I tried. I fixes it for a little while (a minute or so) but it doesnt make a difference.

  • Thanks Peter and Angie for your suggestions.

First I changed the audio and video scratch disk per your suggestion.
It seemed to really make a difference at first, I was able to play the ‘bad’ clips for about 5 minutes before it started to freeze. But maybe that is just because my machine was ‘fresh’ at the start of the day.

Playing a clip from my local drive was significantly worse.

So the problems persists… I was able to test a bit since I got a full 5 minutes this time. When I play the clip at 1/2 resolution it has a lot of artifacts, which the ‘good’ clips do not. Also, even though it was playing without freezing, if I move the playhead to another position it takes almost a full second for the frame to refresh, while it refreshes it still shows the frame where the playhead was before I moved it. This also does not happen on the ‘good’ clips.

Thats all I got, anybody else have any suggestions I would appreciate it!

Again, the clips are all taken on the same day, in the same place, with the same camera (5D). The only difference is that the ‘bad’ clips have audio. (Perhaps there was a different in-camera setting, I wasn’t there so I don’t know and I am hesitant to ask the videographer.)
Tom was unable to replicate my problem, but my system otherwise seems fine…
The one thing I have not tried is a complete uninstall and reinstall of PPCS6

  • Hey, sorry, missed that part of your post.
Ok, I ran the utility and it came out as:
    write: 524.3 mb/s
    read: 659.2 mb/s

The disk has 500 GB available

yes, the audio recording is a mistake on the videographer’s part, but it doesn’t matter, if I play it without the audio track, it still freezes.

🙁 not helpful I take it..

  • Argh, not what I wanted to hear!
I just repaired permission, deleted prefs, cache and preview files again, restart and still same problem….
Ok I will do the complete uninstall and reinstall, I want to finish this project (I am just not using these clips) and then Ill do it.
Ill let you know if it worked or not!

  • Yeah, I did all that before I wrote here…

  • Hi Tom, thanks so much for your help!

I am using a thunderbolt raid. Pegasus by Promise. 6TB.
So that shouldn’t be the problem?

When I double click that clip and let it play in the source monitor, it plays fine perhaps the first 1 or 2 times, but after I try to play these sets of clips for about a minute it starts to freeze. Same if I play it from the timeline.
Did you try to play it in the source monitor for a couple of minutes?

Im also on latest CS6, you got the comp specs and now the raid as well.

What do you think it is?

I need to tell the videographer something, he is delivering me more footage from a shoot they are doing next month.

    D

  • Yep, mountain Lion..
No problems whatsoever.. Been editing of it since I got it a few months ago.
    Good luck

  • Hi Tom,

Thanks for offering to test the clip.
I am actually working of a thunderbolt Pegasus raid from Promise as well, but I have had no problems with it.

I put one of the troublesome clips in my dropbox, you can find it here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/jygy5cbjnd2l8es/IOPnAbz2m-

Let me know what you find, thanks!

  • I changed the sequence settings to the clip’s settings when I dropped one on the timeline.
But that can’t be it, because it won’t play in the source monitor without freezing either.
The render bar is yellow on the timeline.

I have been working without a problem on the clips without audio, the editing mode says: ARRI cinema.

The clips with audio ask for a different sequence setting, that editing mode is: AVC-Intra 100 1080i 50Hz
The rest of the sequence settings are the same.

I didnt shoot it myself, before I go back to this person telling him he did something wrong and I cant use half the clips, I need to be able to tell him what exactly went wrong.
Did he change some setting in the camera? Or is it my computer.

I dont need the audio, but I do need to use the video in those clips.

    Thank you
