An addendum: I’m transcoding all the EX in my current project to prores proxy as it comes in, and am planning to work with that. But like I said, I’ve been having the same issue described by EX users for a long time with prores material.

So yeah, not that anyone cares ;( but it’s definitely limited to multiclip editing using the playhead sync:open feature. Had that disabled for the last 2 days and encountered zero glitches, turned it back on and boom, stuttering frames, garbled screens, and crashes. Last time I’LL ever use FCP’s multiclip feature, at least with 2 or 3 cam projects. To bad my assist already org’ed and sync’ed 3/4 of the project already with multiclip…

Updates:
-Ruled out possible issue with raid (copied media to local drive, reconnected, still having issue)
-Ruled out 444 bandwidth (xcoded to proxy, recon’ed, still having issue)One thing worth noting, seems that when this issue presents itself, if I click over to the finder and back, it seems to fix itself (temporarily). Also, if I turn off “Playhead Sync: Open” it seems to fix itself temporarily. So it seems to be a multiclip issue. Lame. Anyone else have this issue with multiclips and video glitches->fcp crashes?

Thanks Shane. Like i said though, this issue happens exactly the same on two completely separate machines (though they are the same model, with ATI 5770). Are people having issues with the 5770 in general?

Did you ever figure this out? Could it be something with the blackmagic card? I’ve been having that same issue (black frames insterted in final renders randomly) for a while now. Only happens on one of my machines (Mac pro 2.8 quadcore xeon, 16ram, GeForce8800gt, Blackmagic Deck HD Extreme). Does the blackmagic even factor into after effects renders? If I quit AE (CS4 9.02) and try again, it usually stops the black frames for a while, does that work for you, too?

did you ever get this worked out? obviously the spinning beach ball can come form hundreds of different issues, but i had the exact situation as you seem to: just purchased new machine (8 core 2.8), with leopard, ran all system updates, installed FCS 2, updated that completely, started using FCP, runs great, then 10-20 minutes in, spinning beach ball, and i can’t force quit ANYTHING, have to hard reboot the machine, lose all my work. i had previously been using a powerpc g5, and have been told renders made on a G5 are not compatible with intels…so i deleted all my renders, started fresh…same issue. it’s happening right now! system functions, until i try to force quit whatever app i’m in..firefox, itunes, finder…then that particular service is dead until a hard reboot. this is complete list of things i have tried to isolate the problem:
-copy all used media off network drives (NAS/SAN) to local drive
-delete FCP prefs
-delete all old renders
-repaired permission on all drives
-ran disk warrior on all droves
-removed all firewire drivesthis really seems like a file access problem…it’s as if a drive that FCP was accessing suddenly went offline…but none did, they are all (at this point) hardwired into my box.
i’ve also been told this may be a graphics card problem (mine is a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT).
is there some sort of crash log where a layman can see what caused FCP to crash?

You fellas that can still erase P2’s by unlocking lastclip, sending to trash, and apple-option-deleting, are you still on Tiger? My old PBG4 finally bit the dust, so I had to use my other Macbook Pro (with express slot & Leopard) to ingest, so had to get a Duel Adapter.
Unloads cards like a dream, but formatting the cards is not possible…I can’t use that manual method anymore. It acts like it’s sending to trash but the items remain in their folders. I think it’s a Leopard thing, not Duel-related. I went to Panasonic’s downloads page, dl’ed the latest P2 drivers (1.33, which are supposed to allow leopard formatting, according to this) and the P2 Card Formatting Utility just in case, but the driver causes an error when installing, as does the formatting utility when i select a card and choose “format”.
Anybody having no issues with Leopard, Duel Adapter, and formatting cards? Please no “format in camera” replies, anyone working with DP’s knows that’s not an acceptable solution. Thanks
