I guess I need to clairify:

This is a very fast and accurate way to conform Canon h.264 MPEGS to ProRes422
and does not in any way involve Canon Software.

here’s what you do for 30p footage

1)download/install this program to your Mac
Meaning ” MPEG Sreamclip”
2)USE A CARD READER (connected to your USB port)save you footage to a folder.
By Footage I mean FOOTAGE/ .MOV files… Not None footage.

I was just trying to share a sure-true and proven process to a forum member or members.
This is a Process I started using a Year ago and in-fact one that Philip Bloom give Tutorial on.

So this is an option to using the Canon Software and possibly faster.

Ok here’s a cheep sure-fire tool MPEG Streamclip you can
download for FREE at https://www.squared5.com.

here’s what you do for 30p footage

1)download/install this program to your Mac
2)USE A CARD READER (connected to your USB port)save you footage to a folder.
3)3 open MPEG Streamclip goto , LIST/Batch List/add files, direct it to footage folder, chose(highlight all your files)/ Export to Quicktime /select your destination
(make a target folder). In Movie Exporter pulldown to Apple ProRes 422LT (in FCP 7) or use ProRes 422 (the bottom one) type in your desired frame rate 29.97(if NTSC) uncheck interlaced scaling and make sure you have the right resolution checked (1920×1080) and click on the “To Batch” button, your batch will be waiting
click go and wala…new files are being conformer.. depending on how many and how long your movies are will determine how long it takes. It’s pretty fast.
Note: keep you batch down to 10 movies at a time.

WOW, $30.00 you can’t go wrong !

Regarding Zeiss ZF lenses, they tend to have a bit more contrast
which in my liking/opinion is a PLUS/a-good thing,
as the Canon’s all seam bit soft (fore my liking).

You can find the 50mm f1.4 Planar in the $500 range.
I also have the 85mm f1.4 planar I use them on Commercial
Shoots quite regularly.

Whether your making commercials,Making indy’s, or just using the camera as an enthusiast, there’s alot of options on ebay.

This is an issue with the 7D and T2i in 720 recording mode.
However in my experience shooting 720p60 on the Lumix/Panasonic GH1 is better Looking and holds up in editorial.

On the other hand, for 1080p24 5Dm2,7D and T2i are great, and there you have the reason I own both T2i and GH1 Love em’ both (they both serve different purposes.

That being said, I would never give up my HVX200
or stop renting Red and P2 Vericam, where the need be.

I talked with tech-support here in California and there is a “just registered” bug with the new decklink drivers when working in 720p60
DVCProHD (Just in 720p60 DVCProHD) with creating Mattes and Type in FCP 6 and 7.

I am sure they will resolve/fix this soon, however in the meantime you can (as I have been) use Prores or just make your matte another way 🙂

Hi Jensen,

Gh1 has the ability to mount any micro 4/3 lens as well as most evey current lens mount
Canon, Nikon,Minolta, leica,Voigtlander, including Zeiss Z primes,via adapters.
It can also mount PL lenses with the HotRod PL adapter, If you have big bucks or wish to rent
Super 35 cineprime lenses,( Arri,Cooke, Zeiss Mini primes and others)

The Gh1 has a large assortment of lens adapters available for micro 4/3 mount.
Here is a good source, https://www.cameraquest.com/adp_micro_43.htm ,
there are cheeper adapter, however Stephen at cameraquest is very reliable source
and sell official micro 4/3 product (these seem to work a bit smoother), I have both.

Nikon F mount lenses work great I would stay with the faster f2.8 to f1.4
(and faster if you can afford it) for great DOF and the lowlight benifits.
You will need ND and Circular Polar filters when shooting outside with these faster lenses.

Note: These cameras work best in all manual mode: Focus, Aperture, Iso, auto ND OFF, WB….
They liked to be stable best shot on stick or some sort of rigg.
The GH1 excels in the 720 p60 record mode HANDS DOWN. (this what I use the camera for).

My Lenses: Zeiss 85mm, 50mm both f1.4 ZF planar (Nikon F Mount),
Voigtlander 40mm F1.4 (Leica M Mount) ,Nikon 24mm f2.8,
and an assortment of hand-me-down minolta mount lenses (Minolta MC Mount).

MY THOUGHTS:
Although the Cow is a very Technical Forum, in which many of us
have used for support in the 11th hour,(sometimes, many times),when
my back is against the wall. For me the cow has been a life saver.
However, It can also be (unfortunately) a place (as in many Forums) where (on occasion) opinion and personal preference can run very deep…

Sometimes, it’s easy to overlook the fact that without a good script
or even any script, we’re just shoot cool birds, dragonflies,flower,waves, boats,people dancing etc………(actually that’s ok if the content is good and your selling/collecting stock footage). The Point here is “Content Is King”.

I picked up my first HDSLR camera/rig on December 14th A little more than a month ago, tested it, learned what I could in a week and a half about the cameras sweet spot and general workflow. Then used it for a behind-the-scenes shoot for a Superbowl commercial. The footage is going to TNT. I happened to make the animatic for this spot and new the script pretty well working directly with the creative team.
We also created down-loads for mobile devices (“Short, Comedic, Character, Clips”) for the clients website as well as some ringtone.

The point is, I had a real production situation to explore framing/DOF/movement/workflow, etc.. I got to see where the camera performs well and doesn’t. I used a couple of different Forums to make my camera decision/selection, fortunately I believe I made the right one for my needs. All based on a Content oriented situation.

The Cow is a awesome source of information. This “DSLR video” forum is very new, as is the available cameras and tech to consumer on the market, frustration and confusion, here, will be a given. I agree to stop Stressing, We should embrace the New paint brush and if you have a critical Job that must get done now, make sure you have your old brush (in my case, my HVX200) to rely on.

I have been on the move shooting a behind the scene for a Superbowl spot, producing web video for the SuperBowl spot, an Agency Reel and in the studio since I first posted and now have a moment (5 minutes) to respond before hitting the sack, then another 48hrs of editorial…

I have recently put 20hrs + on this Lumix GH1(Panasoinc) HDSLR rig and
found working with the kit 14-140 zoom to be ok but a bit slow at f4.
I ended up dropping some bucks on Zeiss ZF series Primes, I bought
a ZF 50mm f1.4 Planar and the ZF 85mm f 1.4 Tele Planar, beautiful glass, beautiful DOF. I also picked up a Nikon 24mm f2.8 MF, and will
be picking up a 35mm T2 Prime.
From my brief experience shooting video with this camera,I have found it really perform well in all manual modes, Manual Focus and exposure. That means not auto stabilization (OIS), therefore a decent stablization and mounting system is imperative not to mention sticks. I picked up a HOTROD Delixe mount and stabilization system which is geared toward the GH1 and also has a PL mount so If you can afford it you can mount Cine Primes,(that’s right Arri super35 Master Primes and others). Zeiss has a hole new line of awesome Mini Primes for Red and HDSLR. There my short report on Lenses and the GH1.
