    Hi Rick,

Even though you’re using a FCP-specific flavor of XML, its still limited in what it can communicate with Resolve. For example, since EFX and other titling effects are specific to FCP, those won’t transfer to Resolve. I’m no pro, but this is my workflow:

    -Obtain project
-Create duplicate, working timeline of edit right away to preserve original for reference. I usually call it “To Color”
-Render out specific clips with effects added, essentially “baking them in”
-Place on top of original clips in original timeline, then outright replace in the “To Color” timeline
-Simplify new timeline as much as possible, remove all color, effects, etc, place all clips on one video track/layer
-I usually skip audio since it will be rendered out in FCP anyways after, or is synced with a bounced, mixed file.

I don’t believe this is the most efficient way to do it, but it works quite well with the editors I work with, as it provides versioning and transparency. I’ve also heard that by making proxies in the beginning of the post process, rogue timecode can be eliminated and prevent weird XML syncing issues when bringing back into FCP. I have not tried that but worth mentioning.

Something helpful to keep in mind: what level of films are you aspiring to work on? Anticipating the camera formats of your current and future work could help you make a more informed purchase.

Most of my work is on the go, so I stick with my MBP retina, which works great with my ultra portable Logitech gaming mouse. I only made the slight upgrade to the mouse after a regular mouse and keyboard became prohibitive to my productivity and speed. My advice is to only upgrade when absolutely necessary. I’m no seasoned pro by any means, but I have also experienced this problem. Hope that helps! 🙂

March 5, 2014 at 2:48 am in reply to: FCPX Idle CPU While Rendering, Export

I’m using Magic Bullet Looks for some light grades, but I tried duplicating the project and removing all effects, and still had the same issue.

I was unable to monitor my GPU usage, but I’ve downloaded a utility and hope to test it.

Exporting a separate project on different machine utilizes 700-800% of my CPU usage, so I’m doubting it relies solely on the GPU for encoding (as I’ve read on other forums/threads).

Am I wrong if I identify the issue as FCPX not properly hyperthreading?

Thanks all. Very helpful. Will look more closely at manual next time, didn’t see it at first read through.

    Thanks Joseph.

I grabbed all stills from my first project but can’t seem to transfer them between projects. Should I even be transferring this to a new project or would a new timeline be more beneficial?

My overall goal is to have as seamless as possible of a FCPX roundtrip for the client.

    Thank you for your help!

I just purchased a DR-40 and can totally back this up. Its also great since you can expand with better mics and such. Buying the DSLR audio kit from B&H is a great value as well.
