    Hi:

I have never heard the term, “matrix resolution” before but the 171 uses the same imagers (960×540 pixel shifted) as the previous generation HVX200(201, 202, 205, etc.) as does the HVX200A, 202A, etc.

They improved the image but did not change the native resolution.

So Todd, did you ever attend this trade show? Was it worth it? What was the experience like? Did you book any new business from attending?

    Thanks,

November 20, 2008 at 4:20 pm in reply to: Change frame rate on HVX

Also, if you Google “HVX Frame Rate Hack” you can easily get any frame rate from 2fps 12fps, the lowest available on the HVX200. I have scene files for 2fps, 4fps, 10fps on all of my HVX and HPX cameras. I think that there is even a demo clip on YouTube that shows you how to do it if you are not a good reader 😉

Credit to Barry Green for coming up with or at least publicizing this hack, it works great and is pretty easy to do with no ill effects on the cameras. The hack is also in the Barry Green HVX and HPX Book that comes with all of the new cameras in the U.S. market. Many of us have been using the hack for years now and it does not hurt the camera at all.

Not knowing much about your switcher, I would think that would be a question for the switcher manufacturer.

I looked around though and cannot locate a box that breaks out TC from an HD SDI signal as separate analog connections, which would be what you would need if you were trying to integrate the 170 in with other cameras that have TC inputs.

Will rolling shutter artifacts be a factor in your shoots? (flashes, flashing lights, rapidly rotating objects, etc.) If not, sounds like the Sony EX3 would be right up your alley, although considerably more than the EX1 or 170.

As much as I hate JVC, you might also look at their cameras, I don’t know much about them but I think that they do have some models in this range that have TC I/O but do not have a convenient non-tape workflow although I think that they are coming out with some kind of digital recording setup but it’s still HDV codec (yuck). And there are always the outboard disc recorders. But again (yuck).

Based upon what I see, the lighting described in the above post is accurate but “the look” is also heavily dependent on the colorist. A nice, but pretty stylized look that works well for the subject matter. The other thing needed to get this look is a broadcast 2/3″ camera or a 1/3″ camera with a 35mm adapter, the depth of field is very shallow.

The HPX170 does not have genlock but it does embed TC in the SDI out and the SDI is SD or HD switchable. Most smaller modern switchers no longer require genlock for multiple sources anyway but I guess if you have to use an older or higher end switcher than does, you might need genlock.

Also, many people are not aware that the HPX170 does shoot DV, it just shoots it to P2 rather than tape. I did a job last week that the client requested I shoot DV so I did with the 170. I just laid off the DV to my DSR-45 via Firewire, worked like a charm. Not as convenient as tape deck on the HVX200A but the 200A doesn’t have TC or SD output.

On the 205A, the menus may be in Japanese. Not sure if they will be switchable to English although many Japan market products will let you switch to English.

How did you win such a nice camera and where do you live?

October 28, 2008 at 11:42 pm in reply to: Moving from the HVX200 to the HPX170?

Based upon what they are saying, it sounds as if the issue is with the DBeta deck or how the 170’s SDI protocol is handshaking with the DBetas SDI input.

There are only three settings on the 170 to adjust the SDI output, on/off, EDH and Metadata so there is nothing else to adjust on the 170. The fact that it is passing the signal through means that it is working. With digital, stuff usually either works or it doesn’t and it sounds as if the SDI out on the 170 is working.

Not sure where to advise you from here. Sounds like someone needs to experiment a bit with the menus and settings in the Dbeta deck.

October 28, 2008 at 9:29 pm in reply to: Moving from the HVX200 to the HPX170?

    Hi Tim:

Wow, that has me stumped. I do know that all Sony pro decks seem to be really picky about sync, my Beta SP deck is and all of the Dbeta decks I work with are as well.

Here is another test, can you dub out to the 1400 via SDI from the 170? Try dubbing some material from P2 to DVCProHD. If it works perfectly, without a glitch, I would say that your camera is fine. It may then be some arcane setting on the DBeta deck.

Does the glitch happen at regular intervals or is it random?

What happens if you run the 170’s SDI output straight to an SDI monitor? Do you see any glitches? If so, do they occur at the same spots as they do when dubbing to the DBeta deck?

You have to eliminate the variables here to figure out where the problem is. Then you can try to figure out WHAT the problem is.
