I had no success in attempts to downgrade. However I discovered a really weird workaround which allowed me to run Media Composer on the new macbook pro laptop with Mavericks.

I copied Media Composer from my OLD laptop to the NEW laptop using Migration Assistant and copying the applications folder. Then accidentally discovered I could successfully run media composer off of an external hard drive that was a clone of an existing 10.8.4 system.

So I decided to partition the hard drive on the NEW laptop. Partition 1 was OS X Mavericks PLUS the applications folder copied over using Migration Assistant (including Avid Media Composer). Partition 2 was a copy of the 10.8.4 clone I had in my possession which already had Avid Media Composer.

Launching Avid Media Composer off of Partition 2 works. I have no idea why, but I’m running with it at least until Avid says they support Mavericks. Hope this helps anyone else having similar issues.

Right, understood on all. I don’t have the model number handy but I know the vendor stated that it cannot be done. Any advice on whether to try to exchange it for the previous generation retina macbook pro vs holding on to it and waiting for media composer to come up to speed?

I had the same issue. I upgraded to v.3.1.2 and it remedied the problem BUT it created a new one. Now if I’m using the AVC codec in conjunction with titles or renders that are DnxHD, when I export the quicktime, anything at AVC comes out with WRONG FORMAT. Fun!

    Hope this helps…..a little.

    Hi Shane,

one other thing I’d like to run by you if possible. When performing calculations for how much storage I need, i’ve been basing it off of the actual P2 cards. So am I doing this correctly by using the 16gig P2 card as my base?

So for example, production is bringing a total of sixteen 16Gig cards. That comes out to a total max per day of 256 gigs of material. 9 total shoot days are scheduled, so if I multiply that out, i get in the neighborhood of 2.3 Terrabytes. Is this accurate? Just want to make sure I’m not missing a step. Thanks again.

    Hi Shane,

thanks very much for all the info, much appreciated. There are 9 shoot days currently scheduled. Hopefully they WON’T be filling up 24 cards per day (there are two cameras) but the director wanted that ability and option so that he’s never running into – sorry no more space….

In addition, I’m following the production internationally – Thailand, Romania and Iceland/Greenland. Do you think I’m better served by something smaller/lighter as far as drives or would you stick with your previous recommends? Again, thanks very much.
