April 27, 2011 at 6:52 pm in reply to: Accidentally put 1920×1080 footage into 720 Time Line Sequencei’ve had this exact same problem with 720p (60fps) on a 1080 timeline and dragging it into a new timeline (letting FCP auto-set sequence settings) didn’t seem to work for me, the ratio was still messed up. Manually re-adjusting things in the motion (and settings) window didn’t fix things. I’m still using FCP 6.4 on a last generation G5 (since my MacBook Pro was damaged and lost forever) so i’m assuming FCP 7 would probably address these things better, who knows

September 29, 2010 at 5:21 am in reply to: Major glitch issue FCP crashing despite fresh re-installI fixed the problem and upgraded to 6.4,..seems to be more stable now. I’m not entirely sure which plugs were the culprit..I have a pretty large collection of misc 3rd party AE and FCP plugs, some weren’t scripted to work in FCP 6 or 7 (yet they work fine) I identified a particular (older) batch of Magic Bullet filters (not the newer Red Giant one’s, they work great) and some Boris DVE’s which seemed to be the culprit. It’s definitely a ‘bad plugin’ related issue but i’ve never had plugins cause such a crash issue,

September 28, 2010 at 9:01 pm in reply to: Major glitch issue FCP crashing despite fresh re-installI used the FCP uninstaller and it got rid of whatever deep component was causing the glitch. only now the bizarre thing is it isn’t the ‘exact’ same version of FCP I had before.. I’m confused but i’m not even gonna get into it. Thanks

Yea there may have been something in the camera settings that was off, like frame rate, recording settings i’m not sure. It was shot in 720, 30p (regular not native) thats all i know (i didn’t shoot the footage) But i’ve never encountered a situation where audio drifted after capturing, it’s really baffling. Personally i’ve shot tons of footage on the same model camera and haven’t always been careful about matching frame-rate/format settings and all that jazz and it was always ok
My only guess is it’s some bizarre glitch no human has ever encountered

well,..that’s what i’m trying to do

June 7, 2009 at 1:52 pm in reply to: why does 1080 footage need to be deinterlaced via the HVX200?well, I’m a little confused, most say you DO have to de-interlace and some say you don’t, just by shooting at a specific setting. I wouldn’t want to deal with de-interlacing in FCP or compressor afterwards, thats a bit of a added mini-hassle and time factor. I’m still a tad confused over where you DO or DON’T need to and/or IF there IS an advantage to shooting in 1080 (better resolution) some yes, some say no. Which is it?
Guess i’ll just have to run some tests
Thanks though -
this is the EXACT problem i’ve been dealing with working in FCP 5.4, and conversion work-arounds for someone using FCP 6.3 are not easy. Be nice if i had 3 grand for a new computer.
There is a program called Transfer Tool which apparently works in FCP 5.4 for some XDCam HD clips but not “XDCAM EX” though i haven’t experimented much with it yet.If i may shift gears, i’m curious if any of you feel the new XDCAM EX format is better than Panasonics DVCProHD? Any opinions on that?

excellent THANKS, i downloaded Transfer Tool V 2.1 at https://www.sony.co.uk/biz/view/ShowContent.action?site=biz_en_GB&contentId=1166605189229
Not sure this is exactly what i need, the Sony website is a bit confusing but until i get some Sony MFX clips to experiment with i won’t know. The user guide still says one needs FCP 6.1 but the site specs say different.
Btw, when you say “wrapped as MOV’s” is that not good enough for direct usage in FCP? Or do they need to be re-exported into a more edit-friendly codec? What codec are the ‘first-pass’ converted MOV’s (from the MXF files) in?Also just out of curiosity, if i may shift subjects, do you have any opinion over the Panasonic HVX200 (DVCProHD) vs the Sony XDCAM (Mpeg2) in terms of, which you feel is better, higher quality, etc

February 27, 2009 at 3:04 pm in reply to: Certain .AVI clips will not convert with sound…Thanks so much for the help, weird thing is I found out about Perian just a few hours before your post completely by accident by seeing it installed on someone else’s Mac here at the studio. This is exactly what has been desperately needed for a long time for the Mac (and Quicktime) it works beautifully. I knew there were genius freeware application designers out there, now the question is, when will someone put out a new and updated alternative to Mac the Ripper, (heheh)

This actually brings up a more complex problem i have a gripe about. When burning 16×9 footage in toast or DVDSP, it plays back great on a widescreen TV (provided the DVD and Tv are set properly) and computer monitor adjusts ratios automatically quite nicely.
But MOST (non widescreen) TV’s/DVD players from what i’ve experienced will NOT letterbox the image, it simply cuts off the edges and gives you a wrongly matted image. The only way to letterbox a 16×9 image is (to my knowledge) re-scaling and exporting the original image file in a non widescreen project setting, which sometimes doesn’t work with smooth results
