  • Accidentally put 1920×1080 footage into 720 Time Line Sequence

Posted by Scott Kraushaar on April 26, 2011 at 4:32 pm

I know this seems very boneheaded and to be honest I have no idea how it happened but I have some how managed to bring 1920×1080 footage into a 720 timeline. Unfortunately I didn’t realize this mistake until half way through an edit.

My problem I’d like help with is when I change the sequence settings to the correct frame size the timeline changes but the footage does not it remains smaller. I’ve tried resizing it but its not retaining it’s true aspect ratio. Anyone know of a work around or fix that doesn’t involve starting over from scratch?

    Thanks,

    -Scott-

Open a new sequence, drop a clip on the timeline and let FCP match the seq. settings to the clip.

Now, copy and paste all of your old cuts onto that timeline. Then, use remove attributes and check both the basic motion and distort checkboxes on all clips at once. That will fix your problem.

Thank you sir. Your fix worked perfectly and I have learned a valuable lesson to always double check my sequences before editing.

    Again thank you so much.

i’ve had this exact same problem with 720p (60fps) on a 1080 timeline and dragging it into a new timeline (letting FCP auto-set sequence settings) didn’t seem to work for me, the ratio was still messed up. Manually re-adjusting things in the motion (and settings) window didn’t fix things. I’m still using FCP 6.4 on a last generation G5 (since my MacBook Pro was damaged and lost forever) so i’m assuming FCP 7 would probably address these things better, who knows

Go back and read my response to Scott again Damon. The answer is there… You evidently did not reset the distort attribute.

    Hi there,

I did something similar to you but I accidentally created an SD timeline and then dragged all my 720p footage into it and ended up with my clips being resized and muddy.

I followed the same process as you were advised by creating a new sequence with 720p settings. I then copied and pasted the SD timeline into it and removed the attributes. This worked perfectly for resizing images however my edit was all out of whack. Does anyone know how to get the time codes to match so that I don’t need to recut ?

Any help would be most appreciated

    Rebecca
