  • Thunderbolt 3 ports *are* USB ports too. You have 6 USB ports on the mini. I don’t know how many busses there are, but USB 3 has enough bandwidth that an audio interface and a camera won’t saturate.

  • There is already a framework for third-party decoders for AVFoundation and Final Cut Pro X. But it’s not public (yet).

  • “Legacy” means QuickTime 32bit decoders. The next version of macOS will drop 32bit software, so if the only Avid DNxHD/DNxHR decoder is a 32bit component, it won’t work. Apple’s VideoToolbox components API is not public yet, so either Avid works with Apple and make a new 64bit component, or Apple makes its new component API public, or it won’t work anymore.

    That flaw means that on Mojave the address book is as secure as on High Sierra. It was supposed to be more secure, but whatever. By your logic, you should not use High Sierra or every previous macOS release ever.

    A mov file is composed by small parts called “atoms”, so your guess is right, the file is probably corrupted. I think there are some utilities that can fix some broken mov, but I never tried them.

  • Unfortunately the video world is in the ugly phase of switching to a whole color managed pipeline. QuickTime 10 does color correction by using your monitor color profile, and uses an approximated gamma of 1.96 (see https://developer.apple.com/library/content/technotes/tn2257/_index.html for more info). Other apps go YOLO and display whatever they want. The only other player with good color managements I know is mpv.

    Blurays need a specific profile/level of h.264. Probably your h.264 file is not specs compliant anyway.

  • Does After Effects handle color profiles properly? Final Cut uses ColorSync to convert between color spaces and color profiles. So it probably converts your source image to the color space you are currently working in (probably BT. 709), and when you export the ProRes file it will properly write the color tag to the file.
    The thing is, a lot of video software (editor and players) just ignore the color tag and goes YOLO, guessing the color space or completely ignoring the color space info, before blaming Final Cut X (probably the first editor that finally color manages everything properly), you should check if After Effects and Premiere actually handle color space the right way or just show whatever they want.

    This whole mess is the reason you have to still use an external broadcast monitor for color grading.
