OK,you are absolutely right. I appreciate your help. It now works the way I want without invoking trim mode, but….I think this process was very counter-intuitive. “Jump to edit” made sense, while “fast forward” didn’t to my mind. I have to say, coming from FCP 7, I’m not happy with the process of learning Avid. I’ve been using it for about a year, but still find it clunky by comparison. Having said that, Apple has just thumbed their nose at us with FCP X, so I prefer Avid over that beast. Being in an educational setting, I have multiple copies of the various platforms to play with, and I still think FCP 7 is the best so far. Thanks again.

Thanks for your help. I have my up and down keys mapped to “next edit” and “previous edit”. I tried what you suggested about the setting in the FF and Rew tab in composer settings, checking the box that reads “ignore track hilight”, but it still pays attention to hilighted tracks. If I have one video and two audio tracks open and hit up or down arrow, it will jump to the edit with the audio. If I want to jump to just a video edit, I have to un-hilight the audio tracks. It is also still evoking trim mode. I’m not sure why you refer to fast forward and rewind, as those are mapped to J and L as it came from the factory. Also, with snapping, I have been using the control key to snap, and just recently set it to snap without the control key. Not sure which I like better. I am on a PC, so I don’t have a command key.

I’ve been studying up on AMA, and I realize this is normal behavior. I guess the secret is to copy the entire volume to the hard drive before linking. The problem is that Quicktimeserver_OP causes a crash almost every time there is an issue with a drive it thinks ought to be there. Thanks

I would like to join this thread. I was used to using the up and down arrows in FCP to jump back or forward to the next or previous edit. In FCP this works very well, no matter which tracks are enabled. In MC7, the topmost active track seems to determine where you will jump to. Also, the little pink hilight is placed on the transition point between clips, and next time you hit play, it will jump back and play to that point and then repeat. I take it this is the “trim mode” that you are referring to. I too would like to defeat this, as I find it very counter productive.

Snapping, and being able to jump to the next or previous edit are important tools in teaching students how to not produce orphan frames in the sequence. I think this is a weak point with Avid, and I would like to work around it if there is a way.
