I’ve run tests and there is no difference in the quality of the original mpeg and the ProRes Proxy, what I see on the screen and what my final output looks like compared with the original. If you could offer a more detailed explanation of what you mean by quality maybe I could better understand this, I just use my eye. Maybe I’m reading the white paper on ProRes wrong, but the bit rate for Proxy is half of the LT. I store over 200 hours of surgical footage and have started using ProRes Proxy to cut down on space.
Back to my original question, I have since use the “send to compressor” function and exported a h.264 .mov version and it does not have the digital noise. If I export a fully rendered ProRes Proxy from FCP, I get the noise in the export. Weird.
Thanks for feedback BTW,

Brett,
Seems like you have more questions than answers. ProRes Proxy refers to file size and data rate. According to Apple:“Roughly 30 percent of the data rate of Apple ProRes 422
High-quality offline editing at the original frame size, frame rate, and aspect ratio
High-quality edit proxy for Final Cut Server”
The files are recorded to the the mpeg format at 640×480 from a surgical scope in an OR. Not the highest quality to begin with but I still need to edit it so I run it through ProRes and the quality is the same as the original at a fraction on the other ProRes options.

November 24, 2010 at 2:59 am in reply to: Is video production considered a donation for tax deduction? Thanks to everyone who responded—I figured as much, but I had to ask;) I try to do one charitable video a year and recommend it to anyone in this business as a great way to give back and “pay it forward”. I’d much rather donate my time in a meaningful way than write a check.
Cheers,

This is the lens I ended up getting with my 7D. I love it, the image stabilization works well and the price is very good for what you get. I really like how wide it goes, a lot of zooms don’t go to 17mm.

Are you using the send to > compressor option? I have run in to similar problems using this method. I recommend exporting (make self-contained) a master and then importing that into compressor—see if that works… Also download and run “Compressor Repair” software first and repair disk permissions and restart computer if you have force quit compressor.

Why 15.4 Mbps? This seems like overkill to me. Have you tried multi-pass 2.5 Mbps? I usually encode between 1.5 Mbps and 3.5 Mbps…

First of all, this is shot very well. The framing is perfect, great colors and depth of field… The problem is that it is a jump cut. You are cutting from (what appears to be) the same angle from close to wide. Also, if you are having the subject talk to the camera it is almost like a POV. I would pick one shot or the other and use a dip to black if he changes subject. OR you could have him talking to you instead of the camera: put one camera to the left and one to the right (you in between), one close-up and one medium. This would probably make him a little less “intense”.
