    hello…

ya – this is a common question, so i actually still have the mockup i did for previous versions on my site:

that should do what you need! 🙂

May 16, 2007 at 5:32 am in reply to: external hard drive permissions issue

    hello…

ya – by default, os x treats mounted external drives as owned by whomever is logged in at the time…

you can override this default by checking “ignore ownership on this volume” in the ownership and permissions…see here for more info:

    https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh670.html

this will ensure that your permissions are preserved across logins…

  • hello…

short answer – yes. unix logs everything, so it’s all in there…finding it can be trickier, but i suggest that you start some place like here:

    https://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2005/03/15/firewall.html

and go from there – you can search google for things like “os x” (with quotes seems to help) and then add phrases like “network traffic” – you’ll find a lot of home grown solutions out there that turn your computer’s logs into useful data that you can monitor…

(try dashboard and konfabulator as well for spiffy widgets that do what you need)

    hope that helps!

    hello…

printer drivers need updating perhaps? might be that your printer doesn’t support tiger for some reason – hard to say, but if the connection is fine, then i’d start at the source and go back out…

    hope that helps!

not quite following perfectly what you want to do, but something like this might help:

    https://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html

also – check out the apple firewire sdk – it’s a set of developer tools that really open up what you can do with the firewire interface (the above tool uses it, for example)…while there are not a lot of gui wrappers for the sdk, there are a lot of people who have made use of it…like this rather unrelated tool:

    https://www.ammesset.com/irecord/

you can use it to record out of a cable box and create a tivo-esque mac solution. again, not what you’re looking to do, but the underlying firewire sdk might be of use to you in other apps…

    hope that helps!

  • hello…

well – i’m not here to judge – i will say in the end that i don’t know if i buy the argument, but i do understand the other side of that if you leave a wireless setup unprotected, then you take that risk…and yes – you are right that tracking them down in that situation is not feasible…

so go forth, i say. but wrt to your other cable modem install issue – you really don’t need them to install anything – depending on your setup, they should be able to turn on the access remotely and then you can go just pick up a cable modem and plug it in – the whole “install” thing is sort of a farce, and the majority of it is usually installing software on your box that you don’t need (you need nothing to attach to a cable modem software-wise, except for some sort of firewall, but that is just for protection)…

best of luck to you! 🙂

[Sales Dude McBoob] “There a half dozen wireless networks that are all blocked, but they did not block their own. Maybe they are generous. It isn’t bad karma until you know you are doing something wrong. There is nothing wrong with sharing. “

i agree that sharing is nice, but i would counter that you should most definitely go over to your neighbor and ask them if they mind sharing with you. it seems like you are justifying your usage by saying that “it’s ok to share” and that you figure that they must just like to share their connection because it’s not locked down, but you don’t know that. there are a zillion improperly configured network setups in the world. by using their connection, you are taking up X% of their bandwidth, and you might be severely impacting their internet experience.

perhaps you could go over, ask them if they mind sharing their network and offer to pay them a bit each month to help offset the cost. then you are sharing, you are being upfront about it, and you are saving the planet’s resources…

(i just never quite buy the “they must be ok with people using it because they haven’t protected it” line of thought – go find out for sure once and for all and then you know)

easiest thing is to just post a link to your page so that we can get the full context… 🙂

May 1, 2007 at 1:34 am in reply to: Interactive PDF in webpage

    hello…

you could put it in an iframe – if you make the content of the iframe a pdf, then it will appear to sit in the page but the user can interact with it as if was in a separate browser window – here’s an example i whipped up:

    https://sitruc.com/cow/iframe/iframe_pdf_embed.html

    hope that helps!
