you need some sort of scripting language for this – perl, php, etc…you will need either a database or a flat text file to keep track of the results, and you can find numerous freeware options by doing a google or two:

alas i am not a video professional, so i can’t give you 100% solid advice on that sort of thing (try some of our other video forums for better details on that)…but here’s a somewhat related breakdown:

if you have different aspect ratios and other issues, you pretty much have the choice or stretching/shrinking or cropping…at that point it pretty much becomes whichever looks better…in your example here:

the only thing i can add with my level of expertise is to plan ahead for your desired output source when filming if at all possible. but ya – if you shoot in non-square and send it to a square output, something has to give somewhere…

i would also recommend searching the cow archives for phrases like “non-square” and things like that (sans quotes) – i know this has come up a ton in the past, and you will likely find quite a few discussions in the archives about it…

there is no standard resolution (x-y that is) for the web, but typically you offer a few different resolutions that correspond to file sizes that would be nice for different bandwidths to download – so like 1mb, 5mb and then [X]mb, where [X] is your full res version. but even that rule doesn’t always apply so well, as it depends on the purpose of the video and who your target audience is likely to be…typical ratios (for 4:3) are 240×160, 320×240 and then 640×480. but sites like apple and others also now very typically put up hd resolution files as well…

as for crt vs. lcd – all you can do is test your own video in different situations and do the best you can to get it nice for all types…you unfortunately have no control over the lighting situation of your site visitors, and that can vary greatly.

they offer the column view as a default in finder preferences but not others – it is sort of odd. here’s their article on how to train your computer to use your “preferred” view, which would in your case be the list one…

alas, it’s almost impossible to guess as to why they won’t launch – not sure exactly what that means (you click them, nothing happens, you click them, they start then crash, etc.)…

try the os logs to see if there are any error messages there – without any more info that’s about all i can offer, unfortunately… :-/

ya – it’s just an html-formatted email…html formatted emails have plain html (don’t get too fancy with css and js as they won’t work so well if you do absolute positioning with the former or interactivity with the latter)…then all image references point back to your server where you store the files…

wrt to their links to trigger itunes – that’s easy to do. it’s just a plain href that your box (if you have itunes installed) knows to send to itunes. you can get any of those urls by right-clicking (or ctrl-clicking w/ a single button mouse) an item in itunes…here’s one that i got from the music store home:

click on that and it should pop open your itunes directly to that page…

then once you build your html file, you can use a variety of online services or freeware to send the html email to a set of users. note that an html email is just a plain email that has an html mime type so that the recipients’ email client knows to show it as html as opposed to plain text…
