because it would be easier to demonstrate than explain.
make a comp that will be the particle.
make it two 3d layers
attach these to a null
make them move/flip/rotate etc in 3d space via the null(adding an adjustment layer with bezier warp and keyframing this can , depending on the look you are going for, really sell the effect. It worked really well for me simulating leaves)
use the particle comp as a custom particle. you probably need to set it to Loop random .so the particles dont all do the same movement at the same time.
That should get you started.
an example of using this this technique can be seen on my showreel
at 1:10 where all the photos fall
cheers

thanks for your help
little by little I am getting better at them.
I can even more or less understand the body of the one you sent me. Its a bit like learning a foreign language. Reading often comes more easily than speaking (well correctly at least) .
again many thanks

well its working….
but the x and y are scaling and the z remaining the same. Its the reverse I am after.
I am tying to work it out but …… -
Thanks Dan,
I think i can get my head round it. Did you just write that ?
I am very impressed… -
Particular does allow 2 sided particles…. sort of
well it sees them as one sided but if the animation of the particle reveals both sides, then both will show when the animating particle plays.
I am not sure how to post a project up for you to download but i have used this technique to create ticker tape and leaves falling…and will gladly share them with you.

Thanks for the tips guys..
I never heard of blender but will find time to check it out. Looks like it might do the job
Managed to fudge something in the end using multiple renders from particle illusion and comping them together in AE. I also used a rather primative mushroom cloud for the matte from PI emitters june(july?) 2004. I didnt have another source of mushroom cloud .. any ideas ?
Have probably got away with it after its graded etc … lucky i can get away with it being a bit simple….
Cheers

thanks for help
I added .04 of a second on the time remap so each layer is one frame on from the layer above.
I was subtracting it on the effect layer so the effect would start one frame later than the layer above it.
i might still be mixed up about how i am doing it but it does work.once again thanks for your help.
