Thanks for the reply. It seemed like there did have to be a way that I just wasn’t aware of since it is such a common thing to do(at least for me). I have to admit that I much prefer doing such things on a clip by clip basis but that’s to be expected since I’ve been working that way for years(using Velocity). Old habits and all that. 🙂 I can see the advantage of doing things track based though for some/many situations.

I don’t have an answer but I do have a somewhat related question. 🙂 I recently tried both Premiere Pro and Vegas 6 demos and naturally found things I liked and disliked in both of them. Compositing layers in Vegas is more flexible and powerful BUT it all seems very track based rather than clip based. IOW, doing a series of PIP’s would require a number of different tracks if the various clips were to be positioned/sized differently throughout the program. I found that Vegas did have clip based controls for cropping but none for resizing and positioning. Did I overlook something in this area? Premiere did seem to be simpler to work with for such things but also more limited. My demos expired so I never could investigate more. 🙂 My final impression comparing the two was that Premiere Pro was basically quicker and easier to use(considering my mindset and preferred way of doing things) but Vegas was much more powerful overall. This is based on only a few hours of using both(used Premiere4 years ago but I still see some things, such as most transitions have minimal configurability, haven’t really progressed that much. Many things have though.

  • You’ve probably already noticed this but it was Jason, not me, that mentioned problems with DVD Lab Pro. 🙂 I just made a master using it and the duplication place didn’t have any problems at all with it and it’s played fine in a number of players now. I did avoid it until recently because there were some issues but mainly because I needed DLT support earlier. I’ve been very pleased with it and have run into fewer problems than with Encore. It does check the source files and will give you a warning if it doesn’t like what it sees- severe or just informational, depending on the reason. It also gives you anumber of utilities that other apps. don’t have for looking at GOP’s, NTSC levels for menus, etc.

  • Personally speaking , I really like DVD Lab Pro(www.mediachance.com). I have Encore 1.5 and ReelDVD but prefer DLP, which is even the cheapest. They have a 30 day demo- give it a try. BTW, their Menu Studio works quite nicely with it also.
