I know with Program Streams, Quicktime and MPEGStreamclip couldn’t play them cleanly but VLC086a could so it may be the same with transport streams.

Episode Pro should have no problem with those specs.

I’ve seen a bug with MPEG-2 Program streams on Intel Macs that doesn’t exist on PPC Macs. I haven’t tested with Transport Streams though. They should have that fixed shortly.

As others have pointed out, most PAL DVD players can play NTSC. Although I haven’t done exactly what you’re doing, you do seem to be getting some odd results. Your movie length shouldn’t be changing . . . especially by 8 minutes on a 40 minute piece.

Is your source 24P in 29.97 or is it actually 24P?

You should set your Resize Filter to PAL frame size

If you look at the Frame Rate Filter one of the drop down choices is Film to PAL which is 24 to 25 so you might try that or, at least, set it to Automatic rather than Fast.

I used Episode Pro for DGFastChannel and even build a preset for that but I’ve heard people have had success with Cleaner 6.5 on the Mac.

Flip4Mac Episode Pro. I haven’t used it for HD but for SD, I’ve passed certificationf for DG FastChannel. For SD I’ve done 25Mbps without issue.

I have DG Fastchannel specs for SD. If you’re willing to send me the HD specs and FTP a test file, I can encode it for you and send it back so you can FTP to DG.

Are you doing HD spots?

I’m both a DG user and Flip4Mac consultant so I may also be able to test with my Drop Box too.

I’ve seen some issues with PPC vs Intel encodes and passing DG. I have both PPC & Intel Macs so I can test that too.

VBI is Vertical Blanking Interval.

NTSC is 525 lines including the VBI but that’s not to be confused with pixels.

In the vertical interval there can be Vertical Interval Time Code (VITC) and Closed Captioning so they may be trying to preserve that information.

My preset tested and passed DG using Episode 4.2.2. I tested with DVCAM, 8 & 10 bit uncompressed source.

The preset includes the Resize filter for sources that are 720×486. For 720×480 you disable the Resize filter.

MPEG-2 Program streams do NOT play back well in Quicktime or MPEGStreamclip. You can’t use those to judge quality of the encode. VLC086a does a good job with them.
